Part 2 of China's mandatory series on fixed steel ladders and platforms, covering the steel inclined ladder - the steep stair, set between about thirty and seventy five degrees, that gives access to a mezzanine, a walkway or a plant deck and is climbed facing forward with a hand on the rail rather than facing the ladder.

This part specifies the basic safety requirements for the design, the manufacture and the installation of steel inclined ladders, and it applies to the steel inclined ladders used in the workplaces of industrial enterprises.

The requirements are those that decide whether the stair can be walked down carrying something as well as climbed: the angle of inclination and the relationship between the going and the rise that follows from it, the width of the stair and the dimensions of the treads together with their slip resistance and their drainage, the handrails and the stanchions and the loads they must take, the clear headroom, the landings and their spacing, and the connection of the stair to the structure at top and bottom.

To these are added the materials, the loading of the stringers and their supports, the protection against rust and corrosion and the lightning protection earthing following GB 50057, with the erection quality accepted in accordance with GB 50205.

Where an inclined ladder arrives at a platform the guardrails of Part 3 apply. Issued on 31 March 2009 and in force since 1 December 2009, it replaces GB 4053.2-1993.

A new edition, GB 4053.2-2025, has been issued and takes effect on 1 January 2027, broadening the series from steel to metal ladders generally.
