Part 3 of China's mandatory series on fixed steel ladders and platforms, covering the industrial guardrail and the steel platform - the walkway round a vessel, the access deck over a machine and the handrail that is the last thing between a worker and a fall, and the part of the series that the other two hand off to whenever a ladder arrives somewhere.

This part specifies the basic safety requirements for the design, the manufacture and the installation of industrial guardrails and steel platforms, and it applies to the industrial guardrails and steel platforms used in the workplaces of industrial enterprises.

The guardrail requirements are the ones that get quoted: the height of the top rail, the intermediate rail and the gap it is allowed to leave, the toe board that stops a tool being kicked off the edge onto someone below, the spacing of the stanchions, and above all the horizontal load the assembly must resist without permanent deformation, since a guardrail that is merely present but not strong enough is worse than none.

The platform requirements cover the loading of the deck and its supports, the flooring and its slip resistance and drainage, the openings and their protection, the clear headroom and the access, and the connection to the supporting structure.

To these are added the materials, the protection against rust and corrosion and the lightning protection earthing following GB 50057, with the erection quality accepted in accordance with GB 50205 and the safety colours and signs following GB 2894.

Issued on 31 March 2009 and in force since 1 December 2009, it replaces GB 4053.3-1993. A new edition, GB 4053.3-2025, has been issued and takes effect on 1 January 2027.
