1 Scope
This Standard specifies the terms and definitions of personal protective equipment.
This Standard is applicable to the formulation and revision of relevant standards;
preparation of the technical documents; as well as the compilation and translation of professional manuals, teaching materials, books and periodicals, etc.
This Standard is not applicable to personal protective equipment for medical rescue.

The provisions in following documents become the provisions of this Standard through reference in this Standard. For dated references, the subsequent amendments (excluding corrigendum) or revisions do not apply to this Standard, however, parties who reach an agreement based on this Standard are encouraged to study if the latest versions of these documents are applicable. 3 General Terminology
3.1 Personal protective equipment
The general term for all kinds of protective products worn, equipped and used by practitioners to protect against the harm caused by physical, chemical, biological and other external factors.
3.2 Protective properties
Ability to defend against various hazards and harmful factors and protect the safety and health of workers.
3.3 Dustproof properties
Ability to defend against the harms caused by the dust.
3.4 Chemical protective properties
Ability to defend against the harms caused by the toxic substances.
3.5 Acid resistance properties
Ability to defend against the harms caused by the acid substances.
3.6 Alkali resistance properties
Ability to defend against the harms caused by the alkali substances.
4 Head Protective Equipment Terminology
4.1 Basic terms
4.1.1 Head-protectors
A general term for various head protective equipment that protects the head from the harms caused by shock, puncture, squeezing, crushing, scraping, and dirt, etc.
4.2 Component terms
4.2.1 Shell
Components of the outer sur face of the head-protector.
4.2.2 Peak
The protruding part of the front of the shell.
4.2.3 Brim
On the shell, except for the peak, other protruding parts around the shell.
4.2.8 Inner cushion
A component that absorbs impact between the safety helmet headband and shell.
4.2.9 Liner strip
The strap inside the safety helmet directly contacting the top of the head.
4.2.10 Chin Strap
A strap attached to the chin to assist in fixing.
4.2.11 Lock
Adjust and fix the effective length of the harnesses.
4.2.12 Vent
In order to make the helmet breathable, the hole made in the shell.
4.3 Property terms
4.3.5 Wearing height
When wearing a safety helmet, the axial distance from the bottom of the headband to the highest point of the liner strip.
4.3.6 Head-form
Simulated human head model made according to the standard size, and used to test the safety helmet.
5 Respiratory Protective Equipment Terminology
5.1 Basic terms
5.1.1 Respiratory protective equipment
The equipment to prevent hypoxic air and air pollutants from entering the respiratory tract.
5.1.5 Non-powered air-purifying respirator
The air-purifying protective article that relies on the wearer's breath to overcome the resistance of the components, so as to defend against toxic, harmful gases or vapors, particulate matter (such as toxic fume, toxic mist), etc. that harm the respiratory system, eyes and face.
5.1.8 Long tube breathing apparatus
Long tube mask
The protective article that can isolate the wearer's respiratory organs from the surrounding air; obtain the clean air for breathing through a long tube.
5.1.9 Supplied air respirator
The protective article for the wearer’s spontaneous breathing or for the isolated breathing that relies on mechanical force to introduce the clean air through the catheter.
5.1.10 Self-contained breathing apparatus
The isolated type respiratory protective articles that the wearer carries the air bottle, oxygen bottle or oxygen generator as air source.
5.1.12 Positive-pressure respirator
The respiratory protective articles that the pressure in the mask is greater than the ambient pressure during any breathing cycle.
5.1.13 Negative-pressure respirator
The respiratory protective equipment that the pressure in the mask is less than the ambient pressure in the inhalation phase during the breathing cycle.
5.2.2 Facepiece
(Respiratory protection) It is used to connect the wearer's respiratory tract and other devices, and isolate the respiratory tract from the outside air environment.
5.2.2.1 Loose-fitting facepiece
The air supply introduction device that is used for positive pressure breathing protective equipment; it only covers eyes, nose and mouth, and forming a partial close contact with the face.
6 Eye and Face Protective Equipment Terminology
6.1 Basic terms
6.1.1 Eye and face protective equipment (protectors for eye and face)
The protective equipment that defends against the harm to the eyes, face and neck caused by electromagnetic radiation, ultraviolet rays and harmful light, fume and mist, chemicals, metal sparks and flying debris, dust particles, and mechanical and sports shock resistance, etc.
6.1.17 Compound type protective eyewear
The eye protective article that is made of optical filter materials coated with reflective dielectric films on materials that absorb laser radiation of the corresponding wavelength.
6.1.18 Googles and visor for furnace-operator
The eye and face protective articles against infrared and other radiation damage from furnaces and kilns.
6.2 Component terms
6.2.1 Ophthalmic lens
The lenses used to measure, correct vision and/or eye protection, or change appearance.
6.2.2 Spectacle lens
The ophthalmic lenses worn in front of the eyes but not in contact with the eyes.
6.2.3 Protective lens
The lenses designed to protect the eyes from external hazards.
6.2.11 Side-lens
The light-transmitting component that defends against harmful factors that injure the wearer's eyes from the side.
6.2.12 Filter
(Eye protection) lenses that can attenuate the intensity of incident light.
6.2.13 Optical filter
The mixed color lenses that can defend against the harm to the eyes caused by the ultraviolet rays and infrared rays; and at the same time can weaken the irritation of strong visible light to the eyes.
6.2.14 Welding filter lens
A special optical filter that blocks stray light generated during welding to protect and reduce the damage to human eyes caused by ultraviolet and infrared rays.
6.3.6 Optical vertical height
The length of centerline, perpendicular to the horizontal reference line of the lens.
6.3.7 Optical horizontal reference length
The length of the center horizontal reference line between the top and bottom of the lens.
6.3.8 Luminous transmittance
The ratio OF the luminous flux through the lens TO the incident luminous flux.
6.3.9 Spectral transmittance
At any given wavelength lambda, the ratio OF the spectral flux through the lens TO the incident spectral flux.
6.3.10 Visible radiation
The optical radiation that can directly cause visual sensation (wavelength of
380nm~780nm).
6.3.19 Inter-pupillary distance; PD; distance between pupils
The distance between the centers of the two pupils when the two eyes look directly at the target at infinity in front of them.
7 Hearing Protective Equipment Terminology
7.1 Basic terms
7.1.1 Hearing protective equipment
Ear protector
Protective equipment to protect hearing and protect human ear from excessive noise stimulation.
7.2 Component terms
7.2.1 Cup
A hollow round or oval shell mounted on the headband.
7.2.2 Cushion
A deformable component that is used to improve comfort and fit snugly with the earmuff and is installed on the edge of the cup.
7.2.3 Liner
A sound-insulating and sound-absorbing material that is filled inside the cup and uses to attenuate the noise frequency.
7.3 Property terms
7.3.1 Hearing threshold level
The percentage of the difference between a certain ear's hearing threshold for a specified sound signal and the normal hearing threshold specified in GB/T 4854.1-
2004.
7.3.2 Sound-attenuation
Under a given test signal, the average decibel value of the difference between the hearing thresholds of all subjects with and without earmuffs.
7.3.3 Insertion loss
Under the specified test conditions, when the earmuffs are not installed or the earmuffs are installed under the same conditions on the acoustic test device, the algebraic difference of decibels of the 1/3 octave sound pressure level measured by the test microphone in the device.
8 Hand Protective Equipment Terminology
8.1 Basic terms
8.1.1 Glove
Hand protective equipment used to protect hands from injury.
NOTE. Its length may also be increased to cover the forelimbs and the entire arm.
8.1.2 Plane-type glove
Hand protective article with fingers and palms together and on a plane.
8.1.6 Mitten
Hand protective article with four fingers connected together and separated from the thumb.
8.1.7 Fork
The connection part between the fingers of the glove.
8.1.8 The edge of a glove and mitten at the cuff
The uppermost opening of the glove sleeve.
8.1.9 Cuff roll
Reinforced edge at mouth of the glove sleeve.
8.1.10 Wrist
The narrowest part of gloves and cuffs.
8.1.18 Protective glove and mittens
Hand protective article with the function of protection the hands and arms, and for operators to wear.
8.1.19 Working glove
Hand protective article defends against common injuries such as friction and dirt, etc.
8.1.20 Vibration isolation glove
Hand protective article to protect hands from shock damage.
8.1.21 Insect resistance glove
Hand protective article to protect hands from insect bites.
8.1.22 Radioactivity protective glove
Hand protective article to protect hands from radiation damage.
8.1.23 Static protective glove
Hand protective article to prevent static electricity damage caused by accumulation of charge.
8.1.29 Welder’s glove
Hand protective article defends against the harm caused by sparks, molten metals, hot metals, and high-temperature radiation.
8.1.30 Oil resistant glove
Protective article that protects the skin of the hands from irritation caused by oil-grease substance.
8.1.31 Leather glove
Leather hand protective article to prevent the harm caused by sparks, moderate heat, burning, cutting and rough objects.
8.2 Property terms
8.2.1 Resistance to permeation
The ability to prevent liquids (excluding gases) adhering to the surface from penetrating into the inner layer of the glove.
8.2.2 Penetration
Chemicals and/or microorganisms pass through porous materials, seams, pinholes or other parts of gloves in a non-molecular state.
9 Protective Shoes (Boots) Terminology
9.1 Basic terms
9.1.1 Protective shoes (boots)
Protective equipment to protect the wearer's calves and feet from harm caused by physical, chemical, biological, and other external factors.
9.1.8 Protective footwear
Shoes with protective features, and are used to protect the wearer from injuries caused by accidents. They are equipped with protective toecaps that can provide impact resistance for at least 100J energy testing and pressure resistance for at least 10kN pressure testing.
9.1.9 Safety footwear
Shoes with protective features, and are used to protect the wearer from injuries caused by accidents. They are equipped with protective toecaps that can provide impact resistance for at least 200J energy testing and pressure resistance for at least 15kN pressure testing.
9.2 Component terms
9.2.1 Protective toecap
Components that protect toes from injury.
NOTE. It can be made of aluminum, steel or plastic.
9.2.2 Metatarsal guards
Components that protect the instep area from shock and compression.
NOTE. This protector is attached to the instep on the outside of the shoes and can be made of aluminum, steel, fiber or plastic.
9.2.3 Combination foot and shin guards
Protective article used in combination to protect feet and shin from injury.
9.2.4 Instep protector
Protective article covering the instep part of the safety shoes to protect the instep from falling objects.
