Scope

GB 1350-2025 is the English-translated version of 稻谷.

GB 1350-2025 defines the terms relating to paddy (rice in the husk) and specifies its classification, quality requirements, inspection methods, inspection rules, labelling, and packaging, storage and transportation requirements.

It applies to commercial paddy that is purchased, stored, transported, processed and sold, but not to special varieties outside its classification.

Paddy is divided into five categories - early-season indica, mid- to late-season indica, japonica, indica glutinous and japonica glutinous - and graded 1 to 5 by husked rice yield, with Grade 3 as the medium grade: from >= 79.0 % (Grade 1) to >= 71.0 % for the indica types and from >= 81.0 % to >= 73.0 % for the japonica types, together with minimum head rice yields per grade.

All grades must meet common limits on impurities (<= 1.0 %), moisture (<= 13.5 % for indica, <= 14.5 % for japonica), yellow-coloured rice (<= 1.0 %), husked rice in paddy (<= 4.0 %) and admixture of other kinds (<= 5.0 %), with normal colour and odour; each parameter is tested to the referenced GB and GB/T methods.

It replaces GB 1350-2009, revising several definitions, the limit on husked rice in paddy and the test methods, and deleting the hygiene requirements. Issued on 2 December 2025, in force from 1 January 2027.

Foreword

This document is drafted in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 1.1-2020 "Directives for standardization - Part 1: Rules for the structure and drafting of standardizing documents".

This document replaces GB 1350-2009 "Paddy". Compared with GB 1350-2009, apart from structural adjustments and editorial changes, the main technical changes are as follows:

- the definitions of early-season indica paddy, mid- to late-season indica paddy, head rice, sprouted kernels among defective kernels, and impurities have been changed (see 3.1, 3.2, 3.7, 3.9 and 3.12; 3.1, 3.2, 3.8, 3.10.4 and 3.13 of the 2009 edition);

- the requirements for the content of husked rice in paddy in the quality requirements have been changed (see Table 1 and Table 2; Table 1 and Table 2 of the 2009 edition);

- the test methods for head rice yield, moisture content, content of husked rice in paddy and related parameters have been changed (see Clause 6; Clause 6 of the 2009 edition);

- the hygiene requirements have been deleted (see 5.2 of the 2009 edition).
