Scope
GB 10617-2005 is the English-translated version of 食品添加剂 蔗糖脂肪酸酯 (丙二醇法).
GB 10617-2005 specifies the requirements, test methods, inspection rules, and marking, packaging, transport and storage of the food additive sucrose fatty acid ester made by the propylene glycol method, i.e. synthesized from sucrose and fatty acid ethyl esters with propylene glycol as the solvent and used in food processing mainly as an emulsifier, fruit preservative and sugar-boiling aid.
The product is a white or pale yellow powder that shall meet limits for acid value (<= 6.0 mg/g), free sucrose (<= 5.0%), loss on drying (<= 4.0%), ash (<= 2.0%), arsenic (<= 2 mg/kg) and heavy metals as Pb (<= 0.0020%), the arsenic and heavy-metal limits being mandatory.
Test methods cover an identification test with anthrone-sulfuric acid, titration of the acid value with potassium hydroxide-ethanol, free sucrose by n-butanol extraction, hydrolysis and alkaline copper tartrate titration, loss on drying, ash at (850 ± 25) °C, and limit tests for arsenic and heavy metals; the standard also sets lot formation, sampling, re-inspection with twice the number of packages, labelling, 1 kg bag packaging and a one-year shelf life.
It is a non-equivalent adoption of the Japanese Specifications and Standards for Food Additives, 7th edition (1999), and replaces GB 10617-1989, stating the limits to one decimal place and deleting the dimethylformamide test.
Issued on 30 June 2005, in force since 1 December 2005. Classification: ICS 67.220.20, CCS X42. The document runs to 7 pages, delivered complete in English translation.

Foreword
Some of the indicators in Table 1 of this standard are mandatory; the rest are recommended.
This standard is a non-equivalent adoption of "Sucrose fatty acid esters" in the Japanese Specifications and Standards for Food Additives, 7th edition (1999) (Japanese-language edition).
This standard has been redrafted on the basis of "Sucrose fatty acid esters" in the Japanese Specifications and Standards for Food Additives, 7th edition (1999) (hereinafter referred to as the Japanese standard).
Taking into account the national conditions of China, some modifications were made to the Japanese standard when it was adopted. The main differences between this standard and the Japanese standard are as follows:
- the description of the product appearance "white to yellowish-brown powder or lumps, or colourless to reddish-brown viscous resinous substance, odourless or with a slight characteristic odour" has been replaced by "white or pale yellow powder" (3.1 of this standard), in order to match the actual situation of the products made in China;
- the arsenic limit of the Japanese standard, arsenic (as As2O3) <= 4.0 µg/g, has been changed to arsenic (As) content <= 2 mg/kg (3.2 of this standard);
- the item loss on heating has replaced moisture (3.2 of this standard), and the corresponding test method, oven drying at 105 °C for 2 h, has replaced the Karl Fischer titration method (4.4 of this standard), in order to make the test method simpler to operate and to reduce the cost of testing;
- the test item dimethylformamide has been deleted, because sucrose fatty acid esters produced by the propylene glycol process route do not introduce that substance.
This standard replaces GB 10617-1989, Food additive - Sucrose fatty acid ester (method of propylene glycol).
Compared with GB 10617-1989, the main changes in this standard are as follows:
- the indicator for the acid value has been changed from <= 6 mg/g [the mass of potassium hydroxide (in milligrams) required to neutralize the free fatty acids in 1 g of sample] to <= 6.0 mg/g, the indicator for free sucrose from <= 5% to <= 5.0%, the indicator for ash from <= 2% to <= 2.0%, and the indicator for loss on drying from <= 4% to <= 4.0% (3.2 of the 1989 edition; 3.2 of this edition);
- the test item dimethylformamide has been deleted (5.7 of the 1989 edition).
This standard was proposed by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association.
This standard is under the jurisdiction of the Organic Chemicals Subcommittee of the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Chemicals (SAC/TC47/SC2) and the National Institute for Nutrition and Food Safety, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Drafting organisation of this standard: Beijing Research Institute of Chemical Industry, China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation.
Main drafter of this standard: Hu Yanfeng.
This standard was first issued in 1989.
