Scope

GB 16715.1-2010 is the English-translated version of 瓜菜作物种子 第1部分:瓜类.

Part 1 of China's mandatory national standard for vegetable seed, covering gourds. Seed is the one agricultural input whose quality cannot be judged by looking at it, and whose failure is discovered only weeks after sowing, when the season is lost and the field has to be replanted or written off. That is why seed standards are mandatory and why they are written as guaranteed minima on four properties: varietal purity, which decides whether the crop is the variety that was bought; germination percentage, which decides how much of what was sown will emerge; cleanliness, the freedom from other seed and inert matter; and moisture, which governs how long the lot stays viable in store. This part covers the gourd family - cucumber, melon, watermelon, pumpkin and gourds - and sets the grades, the requirements, the sampling and the test methods for their seed.
