Foreword

This standard is the revised edition of GB 11643-1989, Social security number. In order to adapt the content of the standard to the needs of the development of the national economy and society of China, the following changes have been made to the original standard:

- the title of the original standard, "Social security number", has been changed to "Citizen identification number";

- referenced international standards have been added;

- Clause 3, "Definitions", has been added;

- in the structure and representation of the number, the date of birth has been changed from six digits to eight digits, the year being represented by four digits; the provision whereby specific numbers in the sequence code were used for persons aged one hundred years or more has been deleted;

- the address code has been changed to the administrative division code of the county (city, banner, district) where the coding object's permanent household registration is located;

- the check formula and the method of calculating the check code have been given;

- "Annex A (reference) Examples of social security numbers" of the original standard has been changed to "Annex A (informative) Examples of citizen identification numbers"; "Annex B (informative) Examples of the method of calculating the check character value" has been added.

From the date of its implementation, this standard replaces GB 11643-1989.

This standard was proposed by the State Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision.

This standard is under the jurisdiction of the China National Institute of Standardization and Information Classification and Coding.
