Scope

GB/T 35408-2017 is the English-translated version of 电子商务质量管理 术语.

China's national vocabulary for quality management in e-commerce. It defines the terms used to describe quality in an online marketplace. The reason a vocabulary was needed first is that e-commerce quality is not the quality of a product. In a shop, quality is what the goods are; online it is a bundle of things the buyer experiences separately - whether the listing described the item truthfully, whether the seller was who they claimed, whether the order arrived when promised and intact, whether the return worked, and whether the reviews were real. Each of those is a distinct failure mode with a distinct remedy, and the industry had no agreed words for them. China's online retail sector was by then the largest in the world and largely marketplace-based, meaning the platform is not the seller, which raises the further question of what quality the platform is responsible for. This document is the base of a small series that goes on to specify merchant vetting and product information display.
