Scope

GB/T 9721-2006 is the English-translated version of 化学试剂 分子吸收分光光度法通则(紫外和可见光部分).

GB/T 9721-2006 sets the general rules Chinese laboratories follow when a chemical reagent is examined by molecular absorption spectrophotometry in the ultraviolet and visible range.

It defines the terms used - absorption peak, absorption spectrum, absorption pool thickness, amount-of-substance concentration and molar absorptivity - explains the principle the method rests on, and states which water, organic solvents, buffer solutions and standard sample solutions have to be prepared, with the water grades taken from GB/T 6682-1992.

It calls for a single-wavelength single-beam or dual-beam spectrophotometer meeting JJG 178-1996, JJG 682-1990 or JJG 689-1990, and it fixes the determination conditions, from light source to sample solution, and the determination methods themselves.

It covers impurity determination at absorption wavelengths between 200 nm and 850 nm. It replaces GB/T 9721-1988, was issued on 1 September 2006 and has applied since 1 April 2007.

Foreword

This standard replaces GB/T 9721-1988 "Chemical reagent - General rules for the molecular absorption spectrophotometry (ultraviolet and visible)". As compared with GB/T 9721-1988, the main changes are as follows.

- ADD the references (2 of this version);

- ADD the terms and symbols (3.4, 3.16, and 3.18 of this version);

- MODIFY the relevant contents of the "Instruments" part (6.1, 6.2 and 6.3 of 1988 version; 6 of this version);

- SUPPLEMENT the specification for the technical requirements of the "absorption pool" (7.1.4 of 1988 version; 7.1.4 of this version);

- SUPPLEMENT the application conditions as required by the "absorbance reading range" (7.1.6 of 1988 version; 7.1.6 of this version);

- ADD the "Determination of molar absorptivity" (7.2.4 of this version) and the "Determination of mass absorptivity" (7.2.6 of this version);

- ELIMINATE the "precision" (8 of 1988 version).

1 Scope

This standard specifies the instrument requirements and determination methods of chemical reagent molecular absorption spectrophotometry (ultraviolet and visible).

This standard applies to the determination of the impurity contents in the chemical reagent of the absorption wavelength between 200 nm ~ 850 nm AND the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the organic chemical reagents, indicators, and special reagents.

2 Normative references

The provisions in following documents become the provisions of this Standard through reference in this Standard. For the dated references, the subsequent amendments (excluding corrections) or revisions do not apply to this Standard; however, parties who reach an agreement based on this Standard are encouraged to study if the latest versions of these documents are applicable.

For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document applies.

3 Terms and definitions

The terms and definitions as defined in GB/T 14666 AND the following terms and definitions apply to this standard.

3.1 Absorption peak

It refers to the wavelength of the absorption spectrum at the maximum absorbance value, in the unit of nm.

3.2 Absorption spectrum

It refers to, when the concentration of the substance to be determined and the thickness of the absorption pool are constant, the curve of the absorbance (or any function of the absorbance) corresponding to the wavelength (or any function of the wavelength).

3.3 Thickness (L)

It refers to the distance between the two parallel and transparent internal surface planes of the absorption pool, in the unit of mm or cm.

3.4 Amount-of-substance concentration (c)

It refers to the ratio of the amount of substance to the volume of solution, in the unit of mol/L.

3.5 Molar absorptivity (epsilon)

It refers to the absorptivity epsilon with the thickness expressed in cm AND the concentration expressed in mol/L, in the unit of L/(cm·mol).

4 Principles of method

The valence electrons in the molecule of the solution can selectively absorb ultraviolet or visible light, AND transit from the ground state to the excited state, forming an ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrum. Qualitative analysis is carried out based on the absorption peak and the molar absorptivity in the UV-visible absorption spectrum.

5 Reagent

5.1 Water

The water used to prepare solution for the instrument calibration shall comply with the level II water requirements in GB/T 6682-1992. The water used for sample test shall be of the level II or level III water in GB/T 6682-1992 in accordance with the requirements of the product standard.
