Scope

GB/T 351-2019 is the English-translated version of 金属材料 电阻率测量方法.

GB/T 351-2019 lays down the method for measuring the resistivity of metallic materials.

Clause 1 states that it specifies the terms and definitions, test equipment, sample, test, test results and calculation, and test records and reports for resistivity measurement, that it is applicable to measuring electrical properties such as volume resistivity, mass resistivity, electrical conductivity and direct-current resistance ratio, and that the method it provides serves both as an arbitration measurement method and as a conventional measurement method under standard conditions over the range 0.01 to 2.0 ohm-square-millimetre per metre.

Its table of contents runs from terms and definitions through test equipment, sample, test, test results and calculation, to test records and reports, with an informative Appendix A giving a schematic diagram of the common conductor clamping tool.

Clause 3 defines resistance per unit length, volume resistivity, direct-current resistance ratio, the Wheatstone bridge as a single-arm bridge using two contacts and generally applied to higher resistances, and the Kelvin bridge as a double-arm bridge using four contacts and generally applied to lower resistances; clause 4 accordingly requires the Kelvin bridge when the sample resistance is below 10 ohm and the Wheatstone bridge when it is 10 ohm or more, and limits the indication error of the thermometer to 0.1 degree Celsius and the smallest division of the micrometer and the vernier caliper to 0.01 mm and 0.1 mm respectively.

Clause 5 requires the sample to be straight, straightened on a soft surface with a wooden or rubber hammer where hand straightening fails, and free of visible cracks or defects longer than 1 mm as well as of grease, rust and other contaminants so that good contact is ensured.

Clause 6 sets the routine test temperature at 20 plus or minus 5 degrees Celsius and covers length measurement, cross-sectional area calculation and the measurement errors of Table 1, while clause 7 fixes 20 degrees Celsius as the standard temperature, requires resistance measured at another temperature to be converted to that standard temperature, and provides the calculation of the direct-current resistance ratio and the rounding off of results according to the relevant product standard or, failing that, to YB/T 081.

Clause 8 states what the test records and the test reports are generally to contain.

It replaces GB/T 351-1995, from which it differs in the modified standard name, the deletion of the definitions of link resistance and lead resistance, the addition of definitions and calculation methods for conductivity, conductivity percent IACS and direct-current resistance ratio, the change from production inspection to routine inspection, tighter temperature control for both routine and arbitration inspection, the addition of the vernier caliper as a length measuring tool, the added rules on numerical rounding off and the new Appendix A. It was issued on 25 March 2019 and has applied since 1 February 2020.

Foreword

This Standard was drafted as per the rules specified in GB/T 1.1-2009.

This Standard replaces GB/T 351-1995 Metallic Materials - Resistivity Measurement Method. Compared with GB/T 351-1995, this Standard has the major technical content changes besides the editorial modification.

--- Modify the standard name;

--- Delete the definitions of link resistance and lead resistance;

--- Add the definitions and calculation methods of conductivity, conductivity percent IACS, and direct-current resistance ratio;

--- Modify the production inspection into routine inspection;

--- Modify the temperature control of the routine inspection from 10°C~35°C into (20±5) °C;

--- Modify the temperature control of the arbitration inspection from (20±5) °C into (20±1) °C;

--- Add the length measurement tool Vernier caliper;

--- Add the numerical rounding off on the test results and the calculation;

--- Add the schematic diagram of the common conductor clamping tool (see Appendix A).

1 Scope

This Standard specifies the terms and definitions, test equipment, sample, test, test results and calculation, test records and reports for the resistivity measurement of the metallic materials.

This Standard is applicable to the measurement of the electrical properties such as volume resistivity, mass resistivity, electrical conductivity and direct-current resistance ratio, etc.

The method provided in this Standard is an arbitration measurement method and a conventional measurement method for measuring the resistivity, under the standard conditions, in a range of 0.01ohm.mm2/m ~ 2.0ohm.mm2/m.

3 Terms and Definitions

For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.

3.1 Resistance per unit length

It indicates, at the temperature of 20°C, the resistance of a conductor per unit length.

3.2 Volume resistivity

It indicates, at the temperature of 20°C, the resistance of conductor per unit length and per unit cross-sectional area.

3.6 Direct-current resistance ratio

Under the same twice conditions, for the different positions of the same sample, or different processes of the same sample on the same position, the ratio of the DC resistance measurement results.

3.7 Wheatstone bridge

For a single-arm bridge, there are only two contacts during measuring the resistance, which is called two-contact method. Generally, it is used to measure the higher resistance.

3.8 Kelvin bridge

For the double-arm bridge, there are four contacts during measuring the resistance, which is called four-contact method. Generally, it is used to measure the lower resistance.

4 Test Equipment

4.1 When the sample resistance is less than 10ohm, the Kelvin bridge shall be used; when the sample resistance is no less than 10ohm, the Wheatstone bridge shall be used.

Other instruments that conform to the provisions of 4.4 can also be used.

4.2 When clamping the sample by the special tool, the blades on the voltage terminals shall be sharp and parallel to each other, and perpendicular to the same axis. See Appendix A for a schematic diagram of common conductor clamping tools.

4.5 Thermometer: the indication error shall not exceed 0.1°C.

4.6 Micrometer: the minimum division value shall not exceed 0.01mm.

Vernier caliper: the minimum division value shall not exceed 0.1mm.

5 Sample

5.1 The sample shall be straight. When the sample can't be straightened by hand, place it on the surface of a soft material such as wood or rubber, and straightened with a slight force by a wooden hammer or a rubber hammer.

5.2 The surface of the sample shall be free of visible cracks or defects with a length greater than 1mm, as well as grease, rust and other contaminants to ensure good contact.

When the ambient temperature deviates from the standard temperature, according to the resistance and linear size change with the temperature, the resistance value measured at temperature t shall be converted to the resistance value at the standard temperature of 20°C.

7.2 Calculation of standard temperature resistance

At the standard temperature of 20°C, the resistance on the gauge length of the sample

7.8 Calculation of direct-current resistance ratio

At the standard temperature of 20°C, the direct-current resistance ratio of the sample shall be calculated as per Formula (11).

7.9 Numerical rounding off

The results of the test measurement shall be rounded off according to the requirements of relevant product standards. If there are no specific provisions of the product standards, it shall be rounded off according to the provisions of YB/T 081.
