Scope

GB/T 4956-2025 is the English-translated version of 磁性基体上非磁性覆盖层 覆盖层厚度测量 磁性法.

Measuring the thickness of a coating on steel is routine in painting, plating and galvanizing operations. This standard describes a magnetic method for measuring the thickness of non-magnetic coatings on magnetic substrates, which covers many common coating systems on iron and steel parts. It is a recommended national standard.

Coating applicators, plating and galvanizing plants, fabricators, third party inspectors, metrology laboratories and gauge manufacturers are its natural readers. Purchasers who include coating thickness inspection in their contracts can also use it to define the measurement approach.

It was issued on 31 October 2025 and takes effect on 1 May 2026, replacing GB/T 4956-2003. Because the earlier edition is more than two decades old, shops that still follow it should review their gauge calibration and reporting practice against the current text.
