Scope

GB/T 18369-2022 is the English-translated version of 玻璃纤维无捻粗纱.

GB/T 18369-2022 covers the classification and designation, the technical requirements, the test methods, the inspection rules, the marking, packaging, transport and storage of glass fiber roving. It applies to single-end, assembled and direct roving drawn from E glass, ECR glass, R glass and medium-alkali glass, used mainly as reinforcement for polymer matrix composites. Products are classified along two axes, the kind of glass and the process they serve, the second axis separating chopping-type roving, for spray-up, moulding compound and GMT among others, from non-chopping-type roving, for winding, weaving, pultrusion, extrusion compounding and LFT. The designation is built from the product name, the product code to GB/T 4202 and the number of the document. General requirements are set for appearance, glass composition, glass density, moisture content, sizing agent and fibre diameter; separate sets of requirements then follow for the two process families, covering linear density, stiffness, chopping and dispersion ratios, electrostatic behaviour, breaking tenacity, catenary and wet-through rate. Two tables fix the mechanical performance of the composite, one for impregnated strand and ring specimen short beam strength, one for unidirectional laminates. The document replaces the 2008 edition, itself the first revision of the 2001 text.

3 Terms and definitions

The terms and definitions given in GB/T 18374 apply to this document.

4 Classification and designation

4.1 Product classification. Products are classified in the following forms. a) By kind of glass: E glass fiber roving; ECR glass fiber roving; R glass fiber roving; medium-alkali glass fiber roving. b) By the process of use: chopping-type roving, for example for spray-up, moulding compound and GMT; non-chopping-type roving, for example for winding, weaving, pultrusion, extrusion compounding and LFT.

4.2 Product designation. The product designation is made up of three parts: the product name, the product code and the number of this document. The product name has to state the kind of glass and, where necessary, may state the winding forming process, as in direct roving. The product code follows the provisions of GB/T 4202, and the supplementary elements may state the process it suits, the linear density of the strand of an assembled roving and the number of ends.

The first worked example given is an E glass fiber roving of nominal filament diameter 17 µm and linear density 1 150 tex, with T921 sizing, that being a manufacturer's mark, suited to the winding process; its designation is written as E glass fiber roving EC 17-1150 (winding T921) GB/T 18369-2022. The second is a medium-alkali glass assembled roving of nominal filament diameter 13 µm and linear density 4 800 tex, made from strands of 300 tex in 16 ends, with SM433 sizing, suited to the SMC process; its designation is written as medium-alkali glass fiber roving CC13-4800 (moulding compound SM433, 300 by 16) GB/T 18369-2022.

5.1 General requirements

5.1.5 Sizing agent. A reinforcement-type sizing agent is to be used and it has to be compatible with the resin to be reinforced. Where necessary, the acetone solubility has to be provided. Unless otherwise agreed, the deviation of the measured sizing content, reckoned as combustible content, from the nominal value is to lie within +/-0.2 % or within +/-20 % of the nominal value, whichever range is the larger.

5.1.6 Fibre diameter. The mean measured diameter may not depart from the nominal diameter by more than +/-10 %, and the coefficient of variation is to be not more than 12 %.

5.2 Requirements for chopping-type roving

The linear densities in common use are 100 tex, 133 tex, 136 tex, 150 tex, 300 tex, 330 tex, 400 tex, 600 tex, 900 tex, 1 200 tex, 1 500 tex, 2 400 tex, 3 600 tex, 4 800 tex and 9 600 tex. The mean measured linear density may not depart from the nominal value by more than +/-5.0 %, and the coefficient of variation is to be not more than 5.0 %.

5.2.2 Stiffness. The mean measured value is to be from 80 mm to 200 mm, and the range between single values is to be not more than 30 mm.

5.2.3 Chopping ratio and dispersion ratio. The chopping ratio is to be greater than or equal to 95 %. For a single strand of linear density 15 tex or less the dispersion ratio is to be greater than or equal to 80 %; for the rest the dispersion ratio is to be greater than or equal to 95 %.

5.3 Requirements for non-chopping-type roving

5.3.1 Linear density. The linear densities in common use are 100 tex, 133 tex, 136 tex, 150 tex, 300 tex, 330 tex, 400 tex, 600 tex, 900 tex, 1 200 tex, 1 500 tex, 2 400 tex, 3 600 tex, 4 800 tex and 9 600 tex. The mean measured linear density may not depart from the nominal value by more than +/-4.0 %, and the coefficient of variation is to be not more than 4.0 %.

5.3.2 Breaking tenacity. Except for roving used in extrusion compounding and in the LFT process, the breaking tenacity is to meet the following: a) for linear density below 4 800 tex, the breaking tenacity is to be greater than or equal to 0.35 N/tex; b) for linear density of 4 800 tex or above, the breaking tenacity is to be greater than or equal to 0.30 N/tex.

5.3.4 Wet-through rate. Unless otherwise agreed, the wet-through rate of two layers of roving laid at right angles is to be not more than 50 s.

5.3.5 Mechanical properties of the composite

5.3.5.1 Basic mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of the impregnated strand and the short beam strength of a ring specimen of polyester or epoxy resin reinforced with the roving are to comply with Table 1.

Table 1 sets the basic mechanical performance requirements in three columns of glass type: E glass together with ECR glass, R glass, and medium-alkali glass. Under the mechanical properties of the impregnated strand, normalised to a fibre volume fraction of 52.5 %, the tensile strength in MPa is required to be >= 1 900, >= 2 500 and >= 1 700 respectively, and the tensile modulus in GPa >= 74 and >= 85, with a dash for medium-alkali glass. Under the short beam strength of the ring specimen, the standard state in MPa is required to be >= 35 and >= 40 with a dash for medium-alkali glass, and either the wet state in MPa, >= 32 and >= 36, or the strength retention in per cent, >= 90 and >= 90, again with dashes for medium-alkali glass. Two footnotes apply: the wet state means boiling in water at 100 °C for 2 h, and of the two paired technical requirements meeting one is enough.

5.3.5.2 Mechanical properties of the unidirectional laminate. Where the roving is used to make wind turbine blades, or where the customer so requires, the mechanical properties of a unidirectional laminate of polyester or epoxy resin reinforced with the roving are to meet the requirements of Table 2.

Table 2 is given in megapascals and has two columns of glass type, E glass together with ECR glass, and R glass. The tensile strength in the 0 degree direction is required to be >= 900 and >= 1 200, the tensile strength in the 90 degree direction >= 35 and >= 40, and the apparent shear strength in the 0 degree direction >= 50 and >= 60. A footnote states that the 0 degree direction values are normalised to a fibre volume fraction of 52.5 %.

6 Test methods

6.1 Appearance. Visual inspection at normal illuminance from a distance of 0.5 m.

6.2 Glass composition. Inspection according to the provisions of GB/T 1549.
