Scope
GB 9448-2025 is the English-translated version of 焊接与切割安全.
GB 9448 is the Chinese safety standard for welding and cutting, and it is one of the documents most often cited in an industrial safety case in China. It covers the whole ground: the general provisions, the protection of the working area and of the personnel in it, ventilation, fire fighting measures, the safety requirements that apply in confined spaces, public exhibitions and demonstrations, warning signs, and then process by process, oxy-fuel welding and cutting, arc welding and cutting, and resistance welding. Welding kills and injures people in three distinct ways, by fire, by fume and by electricity, and the standard is organised around all three rather than around the equipment. The 2025 edition, effective 1 August 2026, replaces GB 9448-1999, a standard more than twenty-five years old. For a fabricator, a shipyard, a construction contractor or a safety officer working in China, this is the mandatory text a welding operation is judged against.

This document is in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 1.1-2020 "Guidelines for standardization work Part
1.Structure and drafting rules for standardization documents" Drafting. This document replaces GB 9448-1999 "Welding and Cutting Safety". Compared with GB 9448-1999, except for structural adjustments and editorial changes, In addition, the main technical changes are as follows:
a) Added requirements for establishing a controllable safety management system for the implementation of welding or cutting operations (see 4.2.1);
b) Added requirements for on-site management and safety supervision personnel (see 4.2.2);
c) Added special ventilation requirements for cleaning agents, brazing furnaces and asbestos materials (see 6.4);
d) Change "Safety requirements in enclosed spaces" to "Safety requirements in confined spaces" (see Chapter 8, Chapter 7 of the.1999 edition);
e) Added requirements for on-site layout of public demonstrations and exhibitions (see Chapter 9);
f) Added safety requirements for the use of hydrogen systems during oxyfuel cutting (see 11.1);
g) Added safety requirements for electron beam cutting (see Chapter 14);
h) Added safety requirements for laser welding and cutting, and laser-arc hybrid welding and cutting (see Chapter 15);
i) Added brazing safety requirements (see Chapter 16);
j) Added safety requirements for friction welding (see Chapter 17). Please note that some of the contents of this document may involve patents.
