Foreword
This document was drafted in accordance with the rules provided in GB/T 1.1-2020 Directives for Standardization - Part
1.Rules for the Structure and Drafting of Standardizing Documents. This document is Part 1 of GB 5768 Traffic Signs and Markings. GB 5768 has issued the following parts.
2.Road Traffic Signs;
3.Traffic Markings;
6.Highway-railway Grade Crossing;
7.Non-motor Vehicles and Pedestrians;
8.School Zone. This document serves as a replacement for GB 5768.1-2009 Road Traffic Signs and Markings - Part
1.General. In comparison with GB 5768.1-2009, apart from structural adjustments and editorial modifications, the main technical changes are as follows:
a) The scope of application is modified (see Chapter 1; Chapter 1 of Version 2009);
b) The general principles for road traffic signs and markings are modified (see Chapter 4;
3.1 of Version 2009);
c) The requirements for color indicators of road traffic signs and markings are deleted (see
4.1.3 of Version 2009);
d) The requirements for the maintenance of road traffic signs and markings are deleted (see

This document establishes the general principles for road traffic signs and markings and specifies the general requirements for road traffic signs and markings. This document applies to the installation of traffic signs and markings on various types of roads, including highways, urban roads, and areas within the jurisdiction of an organization but open to public vehicles, such as squares, public parking lots and other places for public passage.

4 General Principles
Road traffic signs and markings shall conform to the following principles. -
---Meet the demands of road users; -
---Attract the attention of road users;
---Convey clear and concise meanings;
---Gain compliance from road users;
---Provide sufficient time for road users to appropriately react.
5 General Requirements
5.1 The colors, shapes, lines, characters, graphics and sizes of road traffic signs and markings shall conform to the provisions of GB 5768.2 and GB 5768.3.
5.2 In addition to the road traffic signs and markings specified in GB 5768.2 and GB 5768.3, commonly used graphics for road traffic signs and markings shall conform to the requirements of Appendix A.
5.3 The information conveyed by road traffic signs and markings shall be consistent in meaning and complementary to each other, and it shall not cause ambiguity.
5.4 When there is an inconsistency between the meanings of road traffic signs and markings, the information conveyed by the traffic signs shall prevail.
5.5 When temporary signs and markings differ from those already installed on the road, the content displayed by the temporary signs and markings shall prevail; when variable message signs differ from static traffic signs, the content displayed by the variable message signs shall prevail.
5.6 Road traffic signs and markings shall not convey information unrelated to road traffic, such as advertisements and promotional information.
