Foreword

This document is in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 1:1-2020 "Guidelines for Standardization Work Part 1: Structure and Drafting Rules for Standardization Documents" drafting: This document replaces GB 16557-2010 "Safety Signs for Lifesaving on Sea-going Ships": Compared with GB 16557-2010, except for structural adjustment and editorial Besides the changes, the main technical changes are as follows:

a) Changed the content of the scope "applicable to domestic ships and water facilities of Chinese nationality" (see Chapter 1, Chapter 1 of the:2010 edition);

b) Deleted the term "instruction sign and prompt sign" and its definition (see 3:1 and 3:2 of the:2010 edition);

c) Added the terms escape route signs, emergency equipment signs, life-saving system and equipment signs, mandatory action signs and their definitions (see 3:1~3:4);

1 Scope

China's mandatory national standard for the signs marking life-saving appliances and escape routes on ships. A ship is the hardest environment in which to find the way out: the passages are narrow and identical, the compartments are stacked, the vessel may be listing, and the people who need the signs most are passengers who boarded hours earlier and have never been below decks. The signs are therefore built to be understood without language and without light - graphical symbols for lifejackets, lifeboats, liferafts, muster stations and embarkation points, in the international colour coding, with low-location lighting or photoluminescent material so the route remains visible when a passenger is crawling below a smoke layer. The standard fixes the symbols, their colours and dimensions, and where they must be placed, and it follows the IMO convention so that the marking reads the same to a crew and to passengers of any nationality.
