Scope

GB 21551.1-2008 is the English-translated version of 家用和类似用途电器的抗菌、除菌、净化功能通则.

GB 21551.1-2008 is Part 1 of GB 21551 and specifies the scope, terms and definitions, technical requirements and marking for the antibacterial, bacteria-removal and purification functions of household and similar electrical appliances; it applies to all household appliances with such functions, and other appliances may refer to it.

It requires these appliances to meet the applicable safety standards (at least GB 4706.1), not to become a source of contamination or secondary pollution, and to reach the antibacterial, bacteria-removal and purification rates set in the particular product parts of the series; marking follows GB 5296.2, with instructions stating the functions, the rates achieved, their decline over the service life and the parts to be replaced or cleaned.

Normative Annex A sets the hygienic safety evaluation of components in contact with food or with the user: release limits of harmful substances after water or 4% acetic acid immersion (for example evaporation residue 30 mg/L, lead 1 mg/L, cadmium 0.5 mg/L, arsenic 0.04 mg/L, mercury 0.01 mg/L, vinyl chloride 1 mg/kg), toxicological tests (LD50 > 10 g/kg body weight, negative Ames and chromosome aberration tests, zebrafish test) and an inhibition zone test with a leaching zone of at most 5 mm.
