1 Scope

Part 2 of China's fire protection vocabulary, the terminology of fire prevention - the half of fire safety that is designed into a building rather than brought to it on a truck. This part establishes the terms and definitions used in fire prevention, and it is the reference that fixes what those words mean wherever they appear in a Chinese fire code, a design specification, an approval document or a product standard. The field it covers is the one a designer and a plan checker argue over: the reaction to fire and the fire resistance of materials and of construction, the fire compartment and the elements that form it, the fire load and the combustibility classifications, the structural fire protection, the fire doors, dampers and penetration seals, the smoke control and the pressurisation of escape routes, and the means of escape - the exits, the travel distances, the refuges and the evacuation itself. A vocabulary standard is not an ornament in this field. A fire code is a chain of defined terms, and a dispute over whether a building complies almost always turns out to be a dispute over what one of those terms means; fixing them centrally is what allows the codes to be written concisely and applied consistently. In preparing this part, ISO 8421-2:1987 on building fire, ISO 8421-5:1988 on smoke control, ISO 8421-6:1987 on evacuation and means of escape and ISO 13943:2008 on fire safety vocabulary were used for reference, so the Chinese terms are anchored to their international equivalents. The general terms are in Part 1 and the product terms in Part 5. Issued on 15 May 2015 and in force since 1 August 2015.
