Scope

GB/T 31888-2015 is the English-translated version of 中小学生校服.

China's national standard for the school uniforms of primary and secondary school students. It specifies the technical requirements, the test methods, the inspection rules, and the packaging, storage and marking for these garments, and it applies to the clothing and accessories worn daily and uniformly by pupils in primary and secondary schools, made principally from textile fabrics; other student uniforms may take it as a reference. It was proposed jointly by the Ministry of Education and the textile industry association, which is unusual and tells the reader what it is for. School uniform in China is bought by schools rather than by families, in bulk, at a price set by tender, for wearers who cannot choose and cannot refuse. That combination removes almost every market mechanism that ordinarily protects a clothing buyer, and the standard exists to replace them. It sets requirements across three groups: safety, comprising formaldehyde, azo dyes releasing carcinogenic amines, pH, odour and the sharpness of attached components; durability, comprising tensile and tear strength, seam strength, pilling and dimensional stability to washing; and colour fastness, to washing, rubbing, perspiration, water and light - the properties on which a garment worn every day for a year either survives or does not. The safety requirements are set at the level required for garments in direct skin contact, which is the correct level for clothing worn all day by children, and they are the part of the document that gave it its public significance when it was issued. Issued and in force from 30 June 2015.
