Scope

GB/T 31702-2015 is the English-translated version of 纺织制品附件锐利性试验方法.

China's national test method for the sharpness of the components attached to textile products. It specifies methods for testing attachments for sharp edges and sharp points, and it applies to attachments made of metal, plastic and other materials. An attached component is defined here as anything on a textile product that connects, decorates, identifies or otherwise acts on it - buttons, zips, decorative plates and the like. A sharp edge is an accessible edge that may cause a cutting injury, and a sharp point an accessible tip that may cause a puncture injury. The reason the test exists is that these are the parts of a garment that injure people, and children in particular: a zip pull with a burr from the press, a button with a moulding flash, a rivet with a sharp rim, a decorative plate with a stamped edge that was never deburred. The garment fabric is soft and safe, and the hazard is entirely in the hardware attached to it. The methods are physical and deliberately simple. For sharp edges, a test tape is applied to a steel mandrel and the mandrel is rotated through a full turn along the edge under a specified load; the length of tape cut measures the edge's ability to cut. For sharp points, a sharp point tester is applied to the accessible tip under a specified load, and the test is whether the tip penetrates to the defined depth. The mandrel is specified precisely - 9.35 mm in diameter, free of scratches, dents and burrs, with a surface roughness no rougher than 0.4 micrometres and a surface hardness of not less than 40 HRC - because the mandrel is the reference surface against which every result is obtained. Issued and in force from 26 May 2015.
