Scope
GB/T 16414-2008 is the English-translated version of 煤矿科技术语 岩石力学.
GB/T 16414-2008 is the Chinese terminology standard for rock mechanics in coal mining: it defines the basic terms of the field and the terms relating to coal mining faces, rock bursts and roadways, giving each term in Chinese with its English equivalent and definition.
The basic terms cover rock and strata mechanics, rock pressure and strata control, deformation and the properties of rock (mass) such as rheology, anisotropy, brittleness, ductility, permeability and bulking, and the in situ, tectonic and mining induced stress fields and fractures.
The coal mining face terms cover support loads, setting load and yield load, support density and stiffness, the methods of strata control (caving, backfilling, free subsidence, pillar support), top coal caving, and the classification of roofs (false, immediate and main roof, key strata, unstable to stable roofs).
It applies to all documents, codes, specifications, books, textbooks and handbooks relating to rock mechanics. It replaces GB/T 16414-1996, adding terms such as large deformation of surrounding rocks, top coal caving characteristics, rock burst proneness and prestressed anchorage, and revising English equivalents and definitions.
Issued on 29 July 2008 and in force since 1 May 2009. Classification: ICS 01.040.73, CCS D04. The document runs to 24 pages, delivered complete in English translation.

This standard replaces GB/T 16414-1996, Terms relating to coal mining - Rock mechanics.
Compared with GB/T 16414-1996, the main changes in this standard are as follows:
- the titles of Clauses 2 to 5 have been modified, the word "part" being deleted from the titles;
- terms such as "large deformation of surrounding rocks", "inhomogeneity of rock (mass)" and "ductileness of rock (mass)" have been added to "Basic terms";
- terms such as "top coal", "top coal caving characteristics" and "classification of top coal caving characteristics" have been added to "Coal mining face";
- terms such as "rock burst proneness", "tectonic-type rock burst" and "gravity-type rock burst" have been added to "Rock burst";
- in "Roadways", "temporary support" has been deleted and terms such as "axial force of rock bolt", "prestressed anchorage" and "safety factor of anchor cable" have been added;
- the English equivalents of some terms have been modified;
- the definitions of some terms have been modified;
- the position of some terms has been adjusted.
