Scope
GB/T 15663.4-2008 is the English-translated version of 煤矿科技术语 第4部分：露天开采.
GB/T 15663.4-2008 is Part 4 of the Chinese terminology series for coal mining and defines the basic terms of surface mining, giving each term in Chinese with the English equivalents printed in the standard and its definition.
It covers the basic concepts of surface mining (open pits, overburden and the various stripping ratios, production and stripping capacity), the pit elements (pit limits, benches, berms, slopes, slope angles, slides and slope stability) and the terms of development and mining, from access ramps, trenches and ramp layouts to mining sequences, cuts and working faces; the document goes on to the production process systems.
It applies to all documents, standards, codes of practice, textbooks and manuals relating to surface mining.
It replaces GB/T 15663.4-1995: the codes and the permitted and prohibited synonyms have been removed, the technical and economic terms of the former Clause 6 have been merged into the basic terms and the development and mining clause, the production system clause has been retitled, and several definitions have been revised.
Issued on 18 September 2008, in force since 1 April 2009. Classification: ICS 01.040.73, CCS D04. The document runs to 25 pages, delivered complete in English translation.

Foreword
GB/T 15663, Terms relating to coal mining, is divided into the following parts:
- Part 1: Coal geology and exploration;
- Part 2: Shafts and roadways;
- Part 3: Underground mining;
- Part 4: Surface mining;
- Part 5: Hoisting and transport;
- Part 6: Mine surveying;
- Part 7: Mining subsidence and special coal mining;
- Part 8: Coal mine safety;
- Part 10: Mining machinery;
- Part 11: Coal mine electrical engineering.
This part is Part 4 of GB/T 15663.
This part replaces GB/T 15663.4-1995, Terms relating to coal mining - Surface mining.
Compared with GB/T 15663.4-1995, the main changes in this part are as follows:
- the "codes", "permitted synonyms" and "prohibited synonyms" given in GB/T 15663.4-1995, Terms relating to coal mining - Surface mining, have been deleted;
- the numbering of the clauses and of some terms has been adjusted: the content of "6 Technical and economic terms" has been merged into "2 Basic terms", with "6.9 Advance rate of the working line" and "6.10 Deepening rate of mine works" moved to "4 Development and mining terms" as "4.32 Advance rate of the working line" and "4.35 Deepening rate of mine works"; Clause 6 has been removed; and the title of "5 Production system" has been changed to "5 Production process systems";
- the definitions of some terms have been modified.

This part is under the jurisdiction of the National Technical Committee for Coal Standardization.
