Scope
GB/T 15787-2017 is the English-translated version of 原木检验术语.
GB/T 15787-2017 defines the terms used in log inspection and applies to the inspection of logs and log products; each term is given in Chinese with the English equivalent printed in the standard and its definition.
It covers the kinds of round timber (long poles, logs, specification logs), log forms met in inspection (double branch, multiple pith, butt with branch, split and dissected logs, butt swelling), commercial log names and species groups, and the vocabulary of log size measurement: log length, length class and tolerance, cross center, short, long, longest, average and primary diameters, diameter class, felling cut.
Further terms deal with log defects and quality appraisal - length class inside and outside, radial measurement, vertical check breadth, anomalistic fracture plane, slit inside and outboard - and with log assortment, log volume and log marking, followed by Chinese pinyin and English indexes.
It replaces GB/T 15787-2006: fifteen definitions such as log, log inspection, longest diameter and log marking have been revised, the terms for the upper edge of the axe cut, rounded butt end, within-grade and off-grade timber have been deleted, and several English equivalents have been changed.

Foreword
This standard was drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.
This standard replaces GB/T 15787-2006, Terms in log inspection. Compared with GB/T 15787-2006, the main changes are as follows:
- the following terms and definitions of the original standard, which were inappropriately explained, imprecisely worded or needed adjustment to changes in production, have been modified: log, log inspection, double pith log, butt with branch log, split log, butt swelling and swollen part, cross center, longest diameter, log defect, radial measurement, vertical check breadth, anomalistic fracture plane, slit inside, slit outboard and log marking;
- the following terms of the original standard have been deleted: upper edge of the axe cut, rounded butt end, within-grade timber and off-grade timber;
- the English equivalents of some log inspection terms have been modified.
This standard was proposed by the State Forestry Administration.
This standard is under the jurisdiction of the National Technical Committee on Timber of Standardization Administration of China (SAC/TC 41).
