Scope
GB 8965.1-2020 is the English-translated version of 防护服装 阻燃服.
GB 8965.1-2020 is the Chinese national standard for flame-retardant protective clothing, the garments worn where there are open flames or sparks, or where flammable substances create a flashover risk.
It gives the grading of the clothing and the requirements for it, the test methods, the inspection rules and the marking, packaging and storage, with a normative appendix on the thermal stability test.
Compared with the 2009 edition it drops class C clothing, adds technical requirements for knitted outer shells and garments, removes the bending length requirement of the outer shell and adds limits for decomposable carcinogenic aromatic amine dyes and for odour, adds physical and chemical requirements for the lining, and fixes the outer shell flame retardancy test to GB/T 5455-2014.
It replaces GB 8965.1-2009, was issued on 23 July 2020 and has applied since 1 August 2021.

3 Terms and definitions
Terms and definitions determined by GB/T 12903, GB/T 3291.3 and the following ones are applicable to this document.
3.1 Flame retardant protective clothing
Protective clothing that can prevent itself from being ignited, flaming combustion, and flameless combustion within a certain period of time after contact with flames and hot objects.
3.2 Afterflame time
Under the specified test conditions, the time of continuous flame combustion of the material after the ignition source is removed.
3.3 Afterglow time
Under the specified test conditions, when the flame combustion is terminated, or for flameless combustion, after the ignition source is removed, the time of continuous flameless combustion of the material.
3.4 Damaged length
Under the specified test conditions, the maximum length of the damaged part of the material in the specified direction.
3.5 Thermal protective performance; TPP
In the process of testing the thermal protective material, the cumulative energy that is determined by the intersection of the measured heat transfer reaction curve of the material over the cumulative time and the Stoll curve.
3.6 Inherent flame-retardant fabric
Without any flame retardant after treatment, the flame-retardant fabric that has the corresponding level of flame-retardant performance only through the flame-retardant fiber material or the combination of flame-retardant fiber materials that constitute the fabric.
4 Gradation
According to the protective ability of clothing, flame retardant protective clothing is divided into two grades, A and B.
