Foreword

This document was issued on 30 December 2022 by the State Administration for Market Regulation; Standardization Administration of the PRC and takes effect on 1 July 2023.

It is a GB/T standard: recommended rather than compulsory, but it is the text a Chinese reviewer applies when assessing a submission.

1 Scope

GB/T 42110-2022 defines the vocabulary of cork. The material is unusual in commerce: it is the bark of a tree, harvested every nine years or so without felling it, and its value depends on distinctions that are invisible once a product is made — whether a piece is natural cork cut from a single slab or agglomerated from granules bound with adhesive, which harvest it came from, and how it was processed. Those distinctions carry most of the price difference between two stoppers or two floor tiles that look alike, and China is a large importer and processor of a material it does not grow, buying semi-finished cork from the Mediterranean. Where the trade is international and the grades are traditional, the words are the contract. This document defines the terms for cork, processed cork, semi-finished natural cork, agglomerated cork, cork products and related concepts, and applies to cork raw materials and cork products of all kinds. Under ICS 79.100 and CCS B69, it is written for importers and processors, for the flooring, insulation and closure industries that use cork, and for the inspection bodies that verify what a consignment actually is.

This document defines the terms cork, processed cork, semi-finished natural cork, polymerized cork, cork products, etc.

This document is applicable to cork raw materials and various cork products.

3.1 Cork

3.1.1 Composition

Cork), which is composed of cork cells that are continuously meristering outward from the cork cambium, and can be periodically peeled off when it reaches a certain age and thickness.

The cork tissue produced during the annual growth cycle of cork oak, cork oak, or similar species, formed at the beginning of the year in a thicker, softer, brighter color.

Bright earlywood layer and thinner, darker latewood layer formed at the end of the year.

Radial pore channels for gas exchange between internal tissues and the atmosphere.

Opening of thelitic pores in cross-section.

The outermost layer of cork tissue relative to the trunk.

Relative to the trunk, the innermost layer of the cork tissue.

3.1.1.7

horizontal face

Take the cross-section of the stripped cork, which is perpendicular to the trunk.
