GB 40159-2021 specifies the safety requirements for en-masse (buried scraper) conveyors across design and manufacture, installation, use, inspection and maintenance, and applies to en-masse conveyors that continuously convey bulk materials with a particle size of up to 100 mm; it does not cover highly corrosive materials, materials with a bulk density above 1.8 t/m3 or with special physical properties, or use in explosive gas or combustible dust atmospheres.

The design requirements cover leak tightness, guarding of hot outer walls, cooling and expansion joints for hot-material conveyors, guarding of rotating parts, maintenance platforms above 1 800 mm, fluid coupling spray guards, lighting, and mandatory protective devices: emergency stop, earthing, overload and chain breakage protection, audible and visual alarms and material layer control.

It lists what the manufacturer's instructions for use and maintenance must contain, sets installation rules (installation codes to follow, fixing of head and trough sections, guide rail step of no more than 2 mm, railings at pits and floor openings, control boxes at not less than 1.2 m, no test run before guards and walkways are fitted), and rules for operation: certified personnel, lock-out before maintenance with at least two people including a safety officer, start and stop sequence, and the conditions calling for adjustment or replacement of chains, scrapers, sprockets, guide rails and lubricants.
