Scope

GB 34170-2017 is the English-translated version of 商品煤质量 民用型煤.

GB 34170 is China's mandatory quality standard for civil briquette, the shaped household coal burned for cooking and heating. It sets the feed coal requirements, the product classification, the technical requirements together with their test methods, the inspection rules and the provisions for packing, marking, transportation and storage, and it applies to civil briquette through production, processing, storage and transport, sale and use. The feed coal has to be anthracite, bituminous coal or a coal product such as semi-coke; low-rank and poor-quality material — lignite, middlings and coal slime — is prohibited as raw material for civil coal. Products are divided into honeycomb briquet No. 1 and No. 2 and other briquette No. 1 and No. 2, and each grade carries limits on calorific value, total sulfur, volatile matter, cold compressive strength, phosphorus, chlorine, arsenic, mercury and fluorine, with shatter strength and undersize fraction added for the non-honeycomb products; the auxiliary materials and additives used in processing must be non-toxic, harmless and odourless and must not cause secondary pollution in use. Clause 7 fixes the lot, the sampling and preparation, the delivery and type inspection items and the judgment rules, and Clause 8 the packaging and the marking content. All technical content of this standard is mandatory. Issued by AQSIQ and SAC on 7 September 2017 under SAC/TC 42, it has been in force since 1 January 2018.

3 Terms and definitions

For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB/T 483, GB/T 31356, MT/T 748 and the following apply. For ease of use, certain terms and definitions in GB/T 483-2007, GB/T 31356-2014 and MT/T 748-2007 are repeated below.

3.1 commercial coal — Coal products for sale that are processed from the raw coal, including the steam coal, metallurgical coal, and chemical coal, etc.

3.2 steam coal — Commercial coal that utilizes its calorific value by burning, including the coal used in power plant, industrial boiler and furnace, and others by combustion.

3.3 civil coal — Steam coal used for distributed use of residents' cooking and heating, including civil bulk coal and civil briquette.

3.4 civil bulk coal — Civil coal that is not processed into briquette.

3.5 civil briquette — Processed and shaped civil coal with appropriate technology and equipment, including honeycomb briquet and other briquettes.

3.6 cold compressive strength — The crack resistance strength of the briquette when it is subjected to a unidirectional force at a specified uniform displacement speed on a pressure testing machine at ambient temperature until it cracks.

3.7 shatter strength — A measure of resistance to shattering. With a certain amount of briquette samples, according to the specified conditions and methods, the mass of briquette blocks larger than 13 mm after free fall from a certain height is expressed as the percentage of the original test briquette mass.

3.8 undersize fraction — The mass fraction of the product on the sieve that is smaller than the lower limit of the specified particle size.
