Scope

GB 18421-2001 is the English-translated version of 海洋生物质量.

GB 18421-2001 uses marine shellfish (bivalves) as environmental monitoring organisms and specifies marine biological quality requirements for the different use functions of sea areas.

It applies to the sea areas under the jurisdiction of the People's Republic of China and to both wild and farmed marine shellfish, and is used together with GB 3097-1997 on sea water quality to assess the marine environment.

Sea areas are divided into three classes - fishery, mariculture, nature reserve and food-related industrial waters; general industrial and coastal tourist waters; harbours and marine development zones - and Table 1 sets limits in mg/kg fresh weight for each class: sensory requirements, faecal coliforms, paralytic shellfish poison, total mercury, cadmium, lead, chromium, arsenic, copper, zinc, petroleum hydrocarbons, HCH and DDT, for example total mercury <= 0.05, 0.10 and 0.30 mg/kg.

Monitoring, sampling and sample pretreatment follow the GB 17378 marine monitoring series, and Table 2 lists the analytical methods, detection limits and referenced standards for each item, from atomic absorption spectrophotometry for metals to gas chromatography for organochlorine pesticides.

It is a first edition, issued on 28 August 2001 and in force from 1 March 2002. Classification: ICS 13.060.01, CCS Z 50. The document runs to 5 pages, delivered complete in English translation.
