Scope
GB 18668-2002 is the English-translated version of 海洋沉积物质量.
GB 18668-2002 specifies the quality requirements for marine sediments according to the use functions of sea areas, and applies to all sea areas under the jurisdiction of the People's Republic of China.
It divides sediment quality into three classes: Class I for fishery waters, nature reserves, mariculture areas, bathing beaches and recreation areas with direct human contact; Class II for general industrial water use and coastal tourist areas; Class III for harbour waters and special-use marine development areas.
Table 1 sets limits for 18 items, from wastes, colour and odour, coliform group, faecal coliforms and pathogens to mercury, cadmium, lead, zinc, copper, chromium, arsenic, organic carbon, sulfide, petroleum, HCH, DDT and PCBs, with stricter microbiological limits for shellfish culture substrates for raw consumption.
Sampling and pretreatment follow GB 17378.5, and Table 2 lists the analytical methods, arbitration methods and detection limits for each item, referring to GB 17378.5, GB 17378.7 and GBJ 48.

Foreword
All technical contents of this standard are mandatory.
This standard is formulated in order to implement the Environmental Protection Law of the People's Republic of China and the Marine Environment Protection Law of the People's Republic of China, to prevent and control the pollution of marine sediments, to protect marine living resources and other marine resources, to favour the sustainable use of marine resources, to maintain the ecological balance of the sea and to safeguard human health.
This standard was proposed by, and is interpreted by, the State Oceanic Administration.
This standard is under the jurisdiction of the National Center of Ocean Standards and Metrology.
Drafting organisation of this standard: National Marine Environmental Monitoring Center, State Oceanic Administration.
