Scope

GB 13392-2023 is the English-translated version of 道路运输危险货物车辆标志.

China's mandatory national standard for the marking of vehicles carrying dangerous goods by road. The marking exists for the people who arrive after a crash: the fire crew who must know, before they get close, whether the load is a flammable liquid, a corrosive, a toxic gas or an oxidiser, because the response to each is different and the wrong one makes it worse. So the standard specifies the hazard placards and their placement on the vehicle and the tank, the orange plate carrying the hazard identification number and the UN number, the dimensions and colours that must be legible and recognisable at distance, and the retro-reflective performance that keeps them readable at night by the light of a headlamp. It applies to the vehicles used for the road transport of dangerous goods in China, and it is deliberately aligned with the international system so the marking reads the same across a border.
