Scope
GB 12514.1-2005 is the English-translated version of 消防接口 第1部分：消防接口通用技术条件.
GB 12514.1-2005 specifies the performance requirements and test methods for all types of fire couplings, and applies to fire hose and suction hose couplings, couplings fitted on hydrants, pumps, pump connectors, breechings, nozzles and other fire equipment, and to reducing couplings, different type couplings and blank caps.
The requirements cover basic dimensions, appearance, operating torque of snap-type couplings (0.5 to 2.5 N·m) and operating force of insertion-type couplings (30 to 150 N depending on size), leak-tightness at 0.3 MPa and at nominal pressure, hydrostatic strength at 1.5 times nominal pressure, spring fatigue life of at least 10 000 cycles, drop resistance from 1.5 m, resistance to a 96 h salt spray test, and materials (aluminium-silicon alloys, leaded brass, ductile or grey iron, oil-resistant rubber).
Test methods, type and lot-by-lot inspection rules, marking, packaging and storage are also specified. Together with Parts 2 to 4, it replaces GB 12514-1990 and GB 3265-1995, adding insertion-type and screw-type couplings and deleting the coupling-to-hose connection force requirement.

Foreword
4.1, 4.2, 4.4, 4.5, 4.6, 4.7, 4.8 and Clause 7 of this part are mandatory; the remaining provisions are recommended.
GB 12514 "Fire coupling" is divided into four parts:
- Part 1: General technical conditions for fire coupling;
- Part 2: Types and basic parameters of snap-type fire couplings;
- Part 3: Types and basic parameters of insertion-type fire couplings;
- Part 4: Types and basic parameters of screw-type fire couplings.
This part is Part 1 of GB 12514.
This part mainly draws on the American standard ANSI/UL 236 "Hose couplings for fire protection service" and the revised "Technical standard for insertion-type fire hose couplings" issued by Ordinance No. 5 of the Ministry of Home Affairs of Japan.
This part, together with GB 12514.2, GB 12514.3 and GB 12514.4, replaces GB 12514-1990 "Fire couplings - Performance requirements and test methods" and GB 3265-1995 "Snap-type fire couplings".
Compared with GB 12514-1990 and GB 3265-1995, the main changes in this part are as follows:
- the insertion-type fire coupling type has been added;
- the screw-type fire coupling type has been added;
- the requirement for the connection force between the coupling and the hose in the former standards has been deleted; it is intended to add this requirement in a future revision of the fire hose standard.
This part was proposed by the Ministry of Public Security of the People's Republic of China.
This part is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee 5 of the National Technical Committee for Fire Protection Standardization.
