Scope

GB/T 8807-2026 is the English-translated version of 塑料镜面光泽试验方法.

GB/T 8807-2026 is a Chinese national test standard for measuring the specular gloss of plastics. It describes four methods for measuring the gloss of plastic specular surfaces, using measurement angles of 20°, 45°, 60° and 85°.

The text also contains a terms and definitions chapter and a chapter on test instruments, including the components of the gloss meter. Compared with the 1988 edition, the foreword lists a revised scope, a modified optical path diagram of the specular gloss meter and an amended instrument term.

The standard applies to the measurement of specular gloss on plastic surfaces. Issued on 30 July 2026 and applicable from 1 February 2027, it replaces GB/T 8807-1988.

Foreword

This document complies with the provisions of GB/T 1.1-2020 "Standardization Work Guidelines Part 1: Structure and Drafting Rules of Standardization Documents".

This document replaces GB/T 8807-1988 "Test Method for Specular Gloss of Plastics". Compared with GB/T 8807-1988, the only changes are structural adjustments.

Aside from editorial changes, the main technical changes are as follows.

---The scope has been changed (see Chapter 1, Chapter 1 of the 1988 edition);

---The optical path diagram of the specular gloss meter has been modified (see Figure 1, Figure 1 of the 1988 edition);

---The term "spectral gloss meter" has been amended (see 4.1, 1988 edition 4.1);

---Added "Instrument Components" and "Geometric Conditions" (see 4.1.1 and 4.1.2);

---The "Geometric Angles and Tolerances Table for Light Source Apertures and Receiver Apertures" has been revised (see Table 1, 1988 edition);

---The "Level 2 Work Standards Board" has been revised (see 4.4.2, 1988 version 4.4.2);

---The "Experimental Procedure" has been revised (see Chapter 7, Chapter 6 of the 1988 edition);

---The section on "diffuse correction" has been removed (see Chapter 7 of the 1988 edition);

---The "Test Report" has been amended (see Chapter 9, Chapter 9 of the 1988 edition).

1 Scope

This document describes four methods for measuring the gloss of plastic specular surfaces at 20°, 45°, 60°, and 85° angles.

This document applies to the measurement of specular gloss on plastic surfaces.

2 Normative references

The contents of the following documents, through normative references within the text, constitute essential provisions of this document. Dated citations are listed below.

For references to documents, only the version corresponding to that date applies to this document; for undated references, the latest version (including all amendments) applies.

GB/T 2918 Standard Environment for Conditioning and Testing of Plastic Specimens

GB/T 3978 Standard Illuminating Bodies and Geometric Conditions

3 Terms and Definitions

The following terms and definitions apply to this document.

3.2 Specular gloss

The ratio of the specular reflectance (3.1) of the sample to the specular reflectance (3.1) of the reference surface under the same conditions at a specified incident angle.

Note: Gloss unit (GU) is used.

4 Test Instruments

4.1.1 Instrument Components

Each instrument should include a light source that provides the incident beam and a receiver to receive the desired sample-reflected pyramidal light.

The receiver should be a photosensitive device that responds to visible light, as shown in Figure 1.
