Scope
GB/T 8729-2017 is the English-translated version of 铸造焦炭.
GB/T 8729-2017 is the Chinese national standard for foundry coke, the coke used for cupola melting.
It sets the technical requirements for three grades - excellent, first and second - covering the particle size classes above 120 mm, 120 mm to 80 mm and 80 mm to 60 mm, moisture, ash, volatile matter and sulfur content, crushing strength M40, dropping strength SI504, porosity and the rate of pulverisation.
It allows M40 and SI504 to be used as alternative strength indicators, with M40 prevailing when the two disagree, and states that moisture, volatile matter, apparent porosity and pulverisation rate are not acceptance indicators.
It also covers the test methods, the inspection rules, transport and the quality certificate. It replaces GB 8729-1988, was issued on 14 October 2017 and has applied since 1 May 2018.

Foreword
This standard was drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.
This standard replaces GB/T 8729-1988 "Foundry Coke". Compared with GB/T 8729-1988, the main technical content changes. as follows.
--- Modified normative references (see Chapter 2);
--- Change the special grade to excellent grade (see Chapter 3);
---Modified "Block Size" to "Granularity"; change the size of >80mm, 80mm ~60mm, and >60mm to >120mm, respectively 120mm~80mm, 80mm~60mm (see Chapter 3);
--- Modify the index of crush strength, change the grade from >= 85.0 to >= 87.0; grade 1 from >= 81.0 to >= 83.0; grade 2 from >= 77.0 >= 80.0 (see Chapter 3);
--- Modify the falling intensity index, change the superiority level from >= 92.0 to >= 93.0, the level from >= 88.0 to >= 89.0, and the level from >= 84.0 >= 85.0 (see Chapter 3);
--- Added Appendix A (see Appendix A).
1 Scope
This standard specifies the technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules, transportation and quality certificates for foundry coke.
This standard applies to coke used for cupola smelting.
2 Normative references
The following documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only dated versions apply to this document. For undated references, the latest version (including all amendments) applies to this document.
GB/T 1997 Coke Sample Preparation and Preparation
GB/T 2001 coke industry analysis and determination method
GB/T 2006 Determination of coke mechanical strength
GB/T 2286 Determination of Total Sulfur Coke Content
GB/T 4511.1 Determination of true relative density, pseudo relative density and porosity of coke
GB/T 4511.2 Determination of Dropping Strength of Coke
GB/T 8170 Representation and Determination of Numerical Rounding Rules and Limit Values
3 Technical requirements
3.1 The technical indicators of foundry coke should meet the requirements of Table 1.
3.2 The intensity indicators M40 and SI504 can be used as options. When the values of these two indicators are inconsistent, the M40 value is used.
3.3 Moisture (%), volatile matter (%), apparent porosity (%), and pulverization rate (%) are not considered as quality acceptance indicators.
3.4 When there is special demand, the supply and demand sides shall negotiate and settle the matter.
