Scope

GB/T 4897-2015 is the English-translated version of 刨花板.

This Standard specifies the terms and definitions, classification, requirements, measurement and test methods, inspection rules, symbols, packaging, transportation and storage of the particleboards. It is applicable to general purpose particleboards, furniture grade particleboards, load bearing particleboards and heavy-duty load bearing particleboards. It is not applicable to oriented strand boards.

Foreword

This Standard was drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009 and GB/T 20000.2-2009.

This Standard is an amendment to GB/T 4897.1~4897.7-2003. Compared with GB/T 4897.1~4897.7-2003, the major technical changes in this Standard are as follows:

— COMBINE the standard divided into seven parts into one.

1 Scope

This Standard specifies the terms and definitions, classification, requirements, measurement and test methods, inspection rules, symbols, packaging, transportation and storage of the particleboards.

This Standard is applicable to the general purpose particleboards, furniture grade particleboards, load bearing particleboards and heavy-duty load bearing particleboards.

This Standard is not applicable to the oriented strand boards.

2 Normative references

The following documents are essential to the application of this document. For dated references, only the editions with the dates indicated are applicable to this document. For undated references, only the latest editions (including all the amendments) are applicable to this document.

3 Terms and definitions

The terms and definitions defined in GB/T 18259-2009 and LY/T 1717-2007 and the following ones are applicable to this document. For ease of use, some of the terms and definitions in GB/T 18259-2009 and LY/T 1717-2007 are repeatedly listed below.

3.1 Particleboard

It refers to a kind of wood-based panels assembled and formed via hot pressing after processing wood or non-wood plant fiber raw materials into wood shavings (or scraps) and applying adhesives (and other additives).

3.2 General purpose particleboard

General purpose particleboards refer to the particleboards that are generally not used on load-bearing occasions and for furniture, such as temporary panels for exhibitions, partition boards, etc.

3.4 Load bearing particleboard

Load bearing particleboards refer to the particleboards used for small structural parts in ordinary load-bearing status, such as indoor flooring materials, shelves, roofing boards, shingles, plates for general construction, etc.

3.5 Heavy-duty load bearing particleboard

Heavy-duty load bearing particleboards refer to the particleboards used in greater load-bearing status, such as flooring materials, shelves and girders for industrial use.

3.6 Specification limit

Specification limits refer to the specified limit values used for determining whether some metrological quality characteristic of the unit product is qualified.

3.7 Upper specification limit μU

It refers to the maximum value of the specified qualified metrological quality characteristic.

3.8 Lower specification limit μL

It refers to the minimum value of the specified qualified metrological quality characteristic.

3.9 Dry conditions

Indoor environment or outdoor environment with protective measures. Dry conditions generally refer to the environmental conditions at 20°C, with the relative humidity of not greater than 65%, or with the relative humidity of greater than 65% for only a few weeks a year.

3.10 Humid conditions

Indoor environment or outdoor environment with protective measures. Humid conditions generally refer to the environmental conditions at 20°C, with the relative humidity of greater than 65% and not exceeding 85%, or with the relative humidity of greater than 85% for only a few weeks a year.

4 Classification

Type P1: General purpose particleboard for use in dry conditions;

Type P2: Furniture grade particleboard for use in dry conditions;

Type P3: Load bearing particleboard for use in dry conditions;

Type P4: Heavy-duty load bearing particleboard for use in dry conditions;

Type P5: General purpose particleboard for use in humid conditions;

Type P6: Furniture grade particleboard for use in humid conditions;

Type P7: Load bearing particleboard for use in humid conditions;

Type P8: Heavy-duty load bearing particleboard for use in humid conditions;

Type P9: General purpose particleboard for use in high humid conditions;

Type P10: Furniture grade particleboard for use in high humid conditions;

Type P11: Load bearing particleboard for use in high humid conditions;

Type P12: Heavy-duty load bearing particleboard for use in high humid conditions.

5 Specification limits

5.2 For the dimensional deviation, the numerical values in Table 1 refer to its specification limits. For the mid-panel density deviation and moisture content, the numerical values required in Sections 6.3.1.1 and 6.3.1.2 refer to their specification limits. For the formaldehyde release, the numerical values required in GB 18580 refer to upper specification limits.

— internal bonding strength after cyclic test;

— internal bonding strength after boiling;

— static bending strength after the immersion treatment in 70°C water;

The 5-percentile values x5% for the properties (except for the screw holding force) of individual panels calculated in accordance with the Equation (A.9) in Annex A, shall not be less than the lower specification limits μL specified in Tables 3 to 14.

The 5-percentile values x5% for the properties (except for the screw holding force) of the sample panels in batches calculated in accordance with the Equation (A.7) in Annex A, shall not be less than the lower specification limits μL specified in Tables 3 to 14.

Screw holding force shall be calculated based on the mean values. The mean values shall not be less than the specified values in Section 6.3.3.

The indicators of the following physical properties are the upper specification limits μU:

— water-absorbent thickness expansion ratio after cyclic test.

The 95-percentile values x95% for the properties of individual panels calculated in accordance with the Equation (A.8) in Annex A, shall not be less than the upper specification limits μU specified in Tables 4 to 14.

The 95-percentile values x95% for the properties of the sample panels in batches calculated in accordance with the Equation (A.6) in Annex A, shall not be less than the upper specification limits μU specified in Tables 4 to 14.

6 Requirements

6.1 Specifications and dimensional deviations

6.1.1 Specifications

Thickness: It shall be determined after consultation between supplier and demander.

Format dimensions: 1,220mm wide and 2,440mm long. Special format dimensions shall be determined after consultation between supplier and demander.

6.1.2 Dimensional deviations

The dimensional deviations shall comply with the requirements of Table 1.

6.2 Appearance quality

The appearance quality shall conform to the provisions of Table 2.

6.3 Physicochemical properties

6.3.1 Common requirements
6.3.1.2 Moisture content

The moisture content shall be within the range of 3% to 13%.

6.3.1.3 Formaldehyde release

The formaldehyde release shall conform to the provisions of GB 18580.

6.3.3 Screw holding force

The screw holding force of all the other panel (except Type P1 particleboards) surfaces shall not be less than 900N. The screw holding force of the panel edges shall not be less than 600N.

6.3.4 Additional properties

Dimensional stability and sand content are additional properties of the particleboards. When the demander has requirements for the dimensional stability and sand content, the property indicators shall be determined after consultation between supplier and demander.

7 Measurement and test methods

7.1 Specification measurement

7.1.1 Measuring tools

— Micrometer, with a division value of 0.01mm;

— Steel ruler, with a division value of 0.5mm;

— Steel tape, with a division value of 1.0mm;

7.1.2 Length, width and thickness measurement of panels

The measurement shall be carried out according to relevant provisions in GB/T 19367-2009.

7.1.3 Verticality measurement

The measurement shall be carried out according to relevant provisions in GB/T 19367-2009.

7.1.5 Edge straightness measurement

The measurement shall be carried out according to relevant provisions in GB/T 19367-2009.

7.2 Test piece sampling and dimensioning

7.2.1 Instruments and measuring tools

— Micrometer, with a division value of 0.01mm;

— Vernier caliper, with a division value of 0.1mm;

— Steel tape, with a division value of 1.0mm;

— Balance, with a sensibility of 0.01g.

7.2.2 Test piece preparation 7.2.2.1

TAKE samples according to the provisions of Section 8.2. For the dimensions, quantity and serial numbers of the test pieces, SEE Table 15.

7.2.2.2 The test pieces shall be prepared according to Figure 1. If there are any appearance defects in the sampling position, it is allowed to appropriately stagger the preparation position of the test pieces.

a - Product edges after cutting;

= - Test pieces in the longitudinal direction;

⊥ - Test pieces in the horizontal direction.

7.2.2.3 For the test pieces with static bending strength, modulus of elasticity and surface bonding strength, IDENTIFY their upper and lower surfaces for distinguishing. DIVIDE the test pieces with the same surfaces (upper or lower) into one group. Respectively CONDUCT the test to them.

7.2.2.4 It is not allowed to coke the edges of the test pieces. The edges shall be straight. Adjacent sides shall be at right angles.

7.3 Test methods

7.3.1 Determination of the density deviation 7.3.1.1

The density determination shall be carried out according to the provisions of Section 4.2 in GB/T 17657-2013. The mid-panel density deviation △ ρ (%) shall be calculated according to the Equation (1). […]

7.3.3 Determination of the formaldehyde release

The formaldehyde release shall be determined according to the provisions of GB 18580.

The static bending strength and modulus of elasticity shall be determined according to the provisions of Section 4.7 in GB/T 17657-2013.

The 5-percentile values x5% of the sample panels in batches shall be calculated in accordance with the Equation (A.7) in Annex A.

The 5-percentile values x5% of the individual sample panels shall be calculated in accordance with the Equation (A.9) in Annex A.

During re-inspection, the 5-percentile values x5% of three sample panels shall be calculated in accordance with the Equation (A.11) in Annex A.

7.3.9 Determination of the screw holding force

The screw holding force shall be determined according to the provisions of Section 4.21 in GB/T 17657-2013.

8 Inspection rules

8.1 Inspection types

The product inspection is divided into exit-factory inspection and type inspection.

8.1.1 Exit-factory inspection

The exit-factory inspection includes the following items:

b) Inspection of specifications and dimensional deviations;

deviation, moisture content, water-absorbent thickness expansion ratio, internal bonding strength and static bending strength.

8.1.2 Type inspection

a) When there are major changes in raw and auxiliary materials and manufacturing process;

c) When the quality supervision agency requires the type inspection.

8.2 Sampling and determination rules

General inspection level II specified in GB/T 2828.1-2012 shall apply. USE the acceptance quality limit (AQL) of 4.0 as single sampling scheme. SEE Table 16.

8.2.2 Sampling inspection of physicochemical properties 8.2.2.1

For the products using single sampling scheme along with the same specifications, TAKE at least four sample panels at random for testing the formaldehyde release, water-absorbent thickness expansion ratio, internal bonding strength, static bending strength, modulus of elasticity, surface bonding strength, moisture resistance, moisture content and mid-panel density deviation. 8.2.2.2 Sampling inspection for the accepted products

TAKE three sample panels at random from the products continuously produced in the same specifications. TAKE one of the sample panels for testing the formaldehyde release, water-absorbent thickness expansion ratio, internal bonding strength, static bending strength, modulus of elasticity, surface bonding strength, moisture resistance, moisture content and mid-panel density deviation. USE the other two sample panels for re-inspection (INSPECT non-conforming items only).
