Scope

GB/T 44584-2024 is the English-translated version of 地理标志 基础术语.

GB/T 44584-2024 is the basic vocabulary of geographical indications in China. The field needs one because the Chinese system arrived in three overlapping streams - the quality-based product protection, the collective and certification trade mark route, and the agricultural product designation - each with its own words for what is substantially the same thing, and because the EU-China agreement on geographical indications requires the two sides to mean the same by the terms they have mutually recognised. The standard defines the general terms, the terms of identification, covering the indication itself, the product, the defined area and the specification, and the terms of protection, covering registration, use, control and enforcement. It took effect on 29 September 2024.
