Scope
GB/T 40489-2021 is the English-translated version of 生漆采割技术规程.
GB/T 40489-2021 is the Chinese national code of practice for tapping raw lacquer from lacquer trees.
It covers the terms used in harvesting, the selection of the trees to be tapped, the technical requirements for tapping, the cutting procedures and the treatment of the lacquer after harvesting, together with management, storage, transport and record-keeping.
Its definitions separate alpine lacquer from low-mountain lacquer, and lacquer tapped from large trees (damuqi) from that tapped from small trees (xiaomuqi), noting their different urushiol, gum and laccase contents and drying behaviour.
Trees are ready for tapping according to their age or their diameter at breast height, with different thresholds for wild trees, cultivated large trees and small trees.
It applies to raw lacquer harvesting and production, was issued on 20 August 2021 and has applied since 1 December 2021.

1 Scope
This document specifies terms and definitions related to raw lacquer harvesting, selection of harvesting lacquer trees, technical requirements for harvesting, lacquer cutting procedures, and post-harvesting treatments. Management, storage, transportation, file management and other requirements.
This document is applicable to raw lacquer harvesting and production.

3 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions defined in GB/T 40490 apply to this document.
3.1 Alpine lacquer
Lacquer produced by lacquer trees distributed in the middle and high mountains.
3.2 Low mountain lacquer
Lacquer produced by lacquer trees distributed in low mountains and hilly areas. […]
3.3 Damuqi lacquer
Lacquer collected from the bark layer of large trees in high mountains.
Note: Big wood urushiol has low content of urushiol, high content of gum and laccase, and strong dryness.
3.4 Xiaomuqi lacquer
Raw lacquer collected from the bark layer of small trees in low mountains and hilly areas.
Note: Small wood lacquer has high content of urushiol, low content of gum and laccase, and poor dryness.
4 Picking and cutting sumac tree selection
4.1 Cutting age
Should meet the following requirements.
a) The diameter at breast height of the wild sumac is more than 15cm;
b) Cultivate large sumac trees from 8 to 10 years old or with a diameter at breast height of more than 10cm;
c) Small trees from 5 to 6 years old.
