Scope
GB/T 28888-2026 is the English-translated version of 下水道及化粪池气体监测技术要求.
GB/T 28888-2026 is the Chinese national standard covering monitoring the atmosphere of a sewer before anyone goes in - hydrogen sulfide, methane, oxygen deficiency and carbon monoxide, the instruments and their calibration, the sampling from the surface and the criteria for entry. Confined space deaths in sewers, usually of the man who went in to pull out the first casualty, are the reason this standard exists. It replaces GB/T 28888-2012. It was issued on 28 January 2026 and has been in force since 1 August 2026, replacing GB/T 28888-2012. The document is under the responsibility of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. This page is published from the official record of the 2026 edition; the clause text of a standard this recent is not yet in circulation, and the figures, limits and tables it contains are those of the document itself, delivered in full with the English translation.

Foreword
This document complies with the provisions of GB/T 1.1-2020 "Standardization Work Guidelines Part
1.Structure and Drafting Rules of Standardization Documents". Drafting. This document supersedes GB/T 28888-2012 "Technical Requirements for Gas Monitoring in Sewers and Septic Tanks" and is consistent with GB/T 28888-2012. Aside from structural adjustments and editorial changes, the main technical changes are as follows:
a) The scope has been changed (see Chapter 1, Chapter 1 of the.2012 edition);
b) Six terms have been changed, including monitoring terminal, monitoring management platform, monitoring system, alarm setpoint, display value, and response time (T90). Its definition (see 3.2, 3.3, 3.1, 3.5, 3.6, 3.10, and 3.1, 3.4, 3.5, 3.7, 3.10,
3.14 in the.2012 edition);
c) Added minimum response value, zero-point gas, indication error, alarm error, lower explosive limit, occupational exposure limit, toxic gases, and flammable gases. Nine terms, including gas and non-repudiation treatment, and their definitions (see 3.4, 3.7~3.9, 3.11~3.15);
d) Eight items were removed, including collection point, monitoring area, sampling interval, alarm action value, early warning setting value, zero point, basic error, and calibration point. Terms and their definitions (see sections 3.2, 3.3, 3.6, 3.8, 3.9, 3.11, 3.12, and
3.13 of the.2012 edition);
e) The monitoring system architecture was changed (see Chapter 5, Chapter 5 of the.2012 edition);
f) The basic requirements, system management and functions, security requirements, and communication requirements in the technical requirements for the monitoring and management platform have been changed (see 6.1.1). 6.1.2, 6.1.4, 6.1.5 (and 6.1.1, 6.1.2, 6.1.5,
6.1.7 in the.2012 edition);
g) The operating environment requirements for the monitoring and management platform have been added (see 6.1.3), and the hardware requirements and network response speed have been removed. Degree requirements, stability requirements, and interface communication protocols (see sections 6.1.3, 6.1.4, and
6.1.6 in the.2012 edition);
h) The technical requirements for the monitoring terminal have been revised, including general requirements, operating conditions, power supply, appearance and structural requirements, and operational stability. Performance, response time (T90), alarm function, backup power supply operating time, insulation withstand voltage performance, operating temperature test, constant humidity and heat test Inspection and explosion-proof requirements (see 6.2.1~6.2.4, 6.2.9~6.2.15, 6.2.17, and 6.2.1, 6.2.2, 6.2.5,
