Scope
GB/T 22111-2008 is the English-translated version of 地理标志产品 普洱茶.
GB/T 22111-2008 specifies the protection area, terms and definitions, types and grades, requirements, test methods, inspection rules, and marking, packaging, transport and storage of Puer tea as a product of geographical indication, and applies to Puer tea approved for protection under the Provisions for the Protection of Geographical Indication Products.
It defines Puer tea as tea made from sun-dried green tea of the Yunnan large-leaf variety, grown and processed within the protection area, and divides it into Puer tea (raw) and Puer tea (ripened, obtained by post-fermentation), in loose and compressed forms, with 11 grades for ripened loose tea.
The requirements cover the production area in Yunnan (21°10' to 26°22' N, 97°31' to 105°38' E, gardens at 1 000 m to 2 100 m), its climate and soil, tea plant varieties, planting and garden management, fresh leaf grading, the processing flow for each type, sensory quality tables by grade, physical and chemical indicators (moisture, total ash, powder, water extract, crude fibre, tea polyphenols) and safety limits for lead, rare earths, pesticide residues, coliforms and pathogens.
Annex A (normative) defines the protection area, and Annexes B and C are informative. It was issued on 17 June 2008 and has been in force since 1 December 2008.

This standard was formulated in accordance with the Provisions for the Protection of Geographical Indication Products (Order No. 78 [2005] of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine) and GB 17924-1999, General requirements for products of designations of origin.
Annex A of this standard is normative; Annexes B and C are informative.
This standard was proposed by and is under the jurisdiction of the National Working Group for Standardization of Designation of Origin Products.
