GB/T 21331-2021 is the Chinese national standard for fluff pulp, the pulp used in the absorbent core of nappies and sanitary products.

It gives the terms and definitions, the product classification, the technical requirements - the absorbency and absorption rate, the density, the brightness, the moisture, the dirt and the fibre properties - the test methods, the inspection rules and the provisions on marks, packaging, transport and storage.

It applies to fluff pulp. Pulp mills and hygiene product makers use it. It replaces GB/T 21331-2008, was issued on 9 March 2021 and has applied since 1 April 2022.

Foreword

This Standard was drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2020 "Directives for standardization - Part 1: Rules for the structure and drafting of standardizing documents".

This Standard replaces GB/T 21331-2008 "Fluff pulp". Compared with GB/T 21331-2008, in addition to structural adjustments and editorial changes, the main technical changes in this Standard are as follows.

a) deleted GB/T 7979 as a reference; added GB/T 22804, GB/T 22902, GB/T 24991, GB/T 24992, GB/T 24997, GB/T 27741-2018, GB/T 34845 as references;

b) deleted product levels;

c) modified D65 brightness, tightness, burst resistance, dry bulkiness, water absorption time, water absorption, and dustiness requirements (see 5.1 of this Edition, 5.1 of Edition 2008);

d) added footnotes to Table 1 to make a supplementary description of the requirements of the fluff pulp D65 brightness and burst resistance indicator;

e) modified the dichloromethane extract indicator to acetone extract; accordingly revised the requirements and test methods (see 5.1 and 6.11 of this Edition, 5.1 and 6.6 of Edition 2008);

f) added the requirements for the content of mobile fluorescent substances, absorbable organic halogens (AOX), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg) and corresponding measurement methods (see 5.1 and Clause 6 of this Edition);

g) modified "sanitation indicator" to "microbiological indicator" (see 5.2 and 6.16 of this Edition, 5.2 and 6.11 of Edition 2008);

h) modified the acceptance quality limit (AQL) in the inspection rules accordingly based on the revised indicators in Clause 5;

i) added the note for dispersion method of fluff pulp board (see A.3 of this Edition);

j) modified test methods for dry bulkiness, water absorption time and water absorption amount (see Annex B of this Edition, Annex B of Edition 2008).

1 Scope

This Standard specifies the terms and definitions, product classification, technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules and marks, packaging, transportation, storage for fluff pulp.

This Standard is applicable to raw fluff pulp for the production of disposable sanitary products.

3 Terms and definitions

For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.

3.1 Treated fluff

pulp the fluff pulp that has been chemically treated and has significantly reduced burst resistance

3.2 Untreated pulp

the fluff pulp that has not been chemically treated

4 Product classification

Fluff pulp is divided into treated fluff pulp and untreated pulp according to whether it has been chemically treated.

5 Technical requirements

5.1 The indicators of physical and chemical properties of fluff pulp shall meet the requirements of Table 1.

5.2 The microbial indicator of fluff pulp follows the regulations of GB 15979.

5.3 The fluff pulp board shall not have metal impurities, sand and other foreign objects that are visible to the naked eye. There are no obvious fiber bundles.

6 Test methods

6.1 Specimen extraction

The specimen is extracted according to GB/T 740.

6.3 Quantitative deviation

Quantitative deviation is determined according to GB/T 451.2.

6.4 Tightness

Tightness is measured according to GB/T 451.3.

6.5 Burst resistance

Burst strength is measured according to GB/T 1539.

6.6 D65 brightness

D65 brightness is measured according to GB/T 7974.

6.11 Acetone extract

Acetone extract is determined measured to GB/T 22902.

6.12 Absorbable organic halogen (AOX)

AOX is measured according to GB/T 34845.

6.14 Dustiness

Dustiness is determined according to GB/T 10740. When the test result of either the laboratory paper test method or the pulp board test method is conforming, the result is determined as conforming.

6.15 Delivery moisture

Delivery moisture is measured according to GB/T 462.

7 Inspection rules

7.1 The manufacturer shall ensure that the fluff pulp produced meets the requirements of this Standard or the order contract.

7.2 If the microbiological indicators or raw materials are nonconforming, the batch is determined to be nonconforming.

7.3 Sampling for product delivery inspection shall be carried out in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 2828.1. The sample unit is roll or piece.

7.4 When sampling, the external packaging of the sample shall be checked first. Then take a specimen from it for inspection.

7.5 Acceptability determination. The number of samples inspected for the first time shall be equal to the first sample size given in the plan. If the number of nonconforming products found in the first sample is less than or equal to the first acceptance number, the batch shall be considered acceptable.

7.6 If the buyer has objections to the quality of the product, the batch of products shall be sealed up and notified to the supplier within three months after arrival (or as stipulated in the contract).

8 Marks, packaging, transportation and storage

8.1 Each batch of fluff pulp shall be marked with the product name, implementation standard number, production date, batch number, manufacturer name, manufacturer address, product specifications, product type and other information, accompanying with a product certificate.
