Scope

GB/T 16820-2009 is the English-translated version of 地图学术语.

GB/T 16820-2009 specifies the terms and definitions of the basic theory of cartography and of map-making technology, each term given in Chinese with its English equivalent.

It applies to the preparation of map-related standards, technical documents, teaching materials, books, periodicals and literature.

The vocabulary is arranged in six groups: general terms (branches of cartography, cartographic information, communication, perception and symbology theory, field, urban and remote sensing mapping), map projection, map compilation, computer cartography, map printing, and maps and atlases, followed by a bibliography and Chinese pinyin and English equivalent indexes.

It revises GB/T 16820-1997, adding terms such as cartographic information, cognitive mapping, representation methods, map title, four-colour printing and web map, deleting analogue-production terms such as transparent original, map scribing and cartographic expert system, and aligning definitions with GB/T 14911-2008, GB/T 17159-2009 and GB/T 14950-2009.

Foreword

This standard is a revision of GB/T 16820-1997, Terms of cartography. Compared with GB/T 16820-1997, the main changes are as follows:

- the format and style of the standard have been modified in accordance with the requirements of GB/T 1.1-2000;

- terms such as cartographic information, cognitive mapping, cartographic representation methods, map title, four-colour printing and web map have been added;

- terms such as transparent original, compilation original, map scribing, fair drawing of maps and cartographic expert system have been deleted;

- the names and definitions of certain terms have been modified.

This standard was proposed by the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping.

This standard is under the jurisdiction of the National Technical Committee on Geographic Information Standardization.

This standard was drafted by the Institute of Surveying and Mapping Standardization of the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping.

Main drafters: Guo Yufang, Ma Xiaoping, Lv Yuxia, Ma Congli, Wu Wei and Duan Yihong.
