Scope

GB/T 15835-2011 is the English-translated version of 出版物上数字用法.

GB/T 15835-2011 sets the rules for using Chinese-character numerals and Arabic numerals in public texts.

Clause 1 states that it applies to publications of all kinds, with literary publications and re-set ancient texts excepted, and adds that government documents, enterprises and the fields of education, the media and public services may also follow it as a reference.

Its contents list names Scope, Normative references, Terms and definitions, Choice of numeral form and Use of numeral form, and clause 2 cites GB/T 7408-2005 on date and time notation for information interchange.

Clause 3 defines the three basic terms the standard works with: metering, where the figure is used in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and other arithmetic; numbering, where the figure names or orders things and is not used for arithmetic; and the approximate number, where the figure expresses a fuzzy measurement.

Clause 4 then governs the choice of numeral form, requiring Arabic numerals for metering and for numbering where they make the text conspicuous and easy to read, and insisting on them in particular when the figure carries a unit of measurement such as length, volume, area, mass, temperature, latitude and longitude, frequency and the like, especially where the unit is written in letters; worked examples accompany each rule.

The foreword records that the previous edition leaned explicitly toward Arabic numerals while this one no longer stresses that preference, that it keeps the principle of appropriateness and the convention of following established local usage while rewording and tightening them with more specific provisions and examples, that the hierarchical list structure of the old edition was recast as a drafting-style structure, and that the old basic terms for physical and non-physical quantities were dropped in favour of metering, numbering and approximate number.

It was proposed and is administered by the Language Information Management Division of the Ministry of Education and was drafted mainly by Peking University, under ICS 01.140.10 and Chinese standard class A19.

It replaces GB/T 15835-1995, was issued on 2011-07-29 and has applied since 2011-11-01.
