Scope

GB/T 1503-2024 is the English-translated version of 铸钢轧辊.

GB/T 1503-2024 is the Chinese standard for cast steel rolls: the rolls that do the work in a rolling mill, and one of the few components in heavy industry that is deliberately consumed and replaced on a schedule.

A roll is bought on hardness, on hardness depth and on the soundness of the bond between the shell and the core, because a roll that spalls in service damages the mill and the product with it.

The standard sets the grades and their designation, the chemical composition of each, the requirements on the manufacturing route including the casting and the heat treatment, the mechanical properties and the hardness and its permitted variation over the barrel and through the working depth, the internal quality requirements and the ultrasonic examination and its acceptance criteria, the surface quality and the dimensional and geometric tolerances, the balancing requirements, together with the test methods, the inspection rules and the marking, packaging, transport and quality certificate.

The 2024 edition replaces GB/T 1503-2008. For a roll foundry or a rolling mill in China, this is the acceptance text.

Foreword

This document specifies the technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules, markings, packaging and quality certificate of cast steel rolls.

This document is applicable to cast steel rolls used for metal material processing and composite rolls (including roll rings) with cast steel working layers.

3.1 Terms and definitions

For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB/T 12604.1, GB/T 15546 and the following apply.

3.1.1 outer layer thickness

thickness of the same material of the working layer of a composite roll

3.2 Symbols

For the purposes of this document, the following symbols apply.

B——bottom echo or bottom echo height

F——defect echo or defect echo height

H——distance from the defect echo to the detection surface

S——indicated area of a defect measured with a specified sensitivity echo height as a boundary

f.s——scale of full screen height of the instrument

4.1 General requirements

4.1.1 Rolls shall be manufactured in accordance with this document according to the use of the rolls and the order drawing confirmed by the supplier and purchaser.

4.1.2 Technical requirements other than those in this document shall be determined by the supplier and the purchaser through negotiation.

4.2 Chemical composition and surface hardness

4.2.1 The chemical composition and surface hardness shall meet the requirements of Table 1.

4.2.2 The core of cast steel composite roll (ring) may be made of spheroidal graphite cast iron, graphite steel, low-alloy steel or forged steel.

4.2.3 The chemical composition of the core is designed by the manufacturer according to the performance requirements.
