Foreword

This document is in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 1.1-2020 "Guidelines for standardization work Part

1.Structure and drafting rules for standardization documents" Drafting. This document replaces GB/T 11617-2000 "Dictionary Compilation Symbols", GB/T 15238-2000 "Basic Terms for Dictionary Compilation of Terminology" GB/T 15933-2005 "Common Chinese Abbreviations for Dictionary Compilation". This document is based on GB/T 11617-2000 and integrates GB/T 15238-2000, GB/T 15933-2005. Compared with GB/T 15933-2005, in addition to structural adjustments and editorial changes, the main technical changes are as follows:

--- Changed the statement of the scope of application of the document (see Chapter 1, Chapter 1 of GB/T 11617-2000);

--- Added two general terms. "dictionary compilation" (see 3.1.2) and "dictionary compilation abbreviations" (see 3.1.4);

--- Changed the definition of "dictionary compilation symbol" (see 3.1.3,

3.1 of GB/T 11617-2000);

--- Deleted "Terminology Codification" (see

3.2 of GB/T 11617-2000);

--- Changed the English equivalent of "dictionary" (see 3.2.1,

2.2 of GB/T 15238-2000);

--- Changed the definition of "encyclopedia" (see 3.2.3,

2.4 of GB/T 15238-2000);

--- Added "Chinese Dictionary" (see 3.2.4), "National Language Dictionary" (see 3.2.5), "Foreign Language Dictionary" (see 3.2.6);

--- Changed the English equivalent of "language dictionary" (see 3.2.7,

1 Scope

GB/T 11617-2025 is the Chinese national standard on lexicography - basic terminology, common symbols and chinese abbreviations, in the field of generalities, terminology and documentation. The /T suffix marks it as a recommended standard: it is not compulsory by itself, but it becomes binding as soon as a contract, a tender or a customer specification calls it up - which in practice is how most foreign buyers meet it. It was issued on 25 April 2025 by the State Administration for Market Regulation; Standardization Administration of China, and has been in force since 1 November 2025. Classification: ICS 01.080.99, CCS A 22. This page is published from the official record of the standard held by the Chinese standards administration: the identification, the dates, the classification and the issuing body are taken from there. The clause text, the tables and the numeric limits are in the document itself, which is delivered complete in English translation.

This document defines the basic terms of dictionary compilation, stipulates the commonly used symbols and their usage, and the commonly used Chinese abbreviations in dictionary compilation. Abbreviations and the full names they refer to. This document is applicable to dictionary compilation, terminology database development, and the application of terminology and the use of symbols and abbreviations in academic research in related fields.
