1 Scope

China's mandatory national standard for the regional emblem of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The emblem is defined in the Basic Law and is a legal symbol whose reproduction is regulated: the bauhinia flower with five petals, each bearing a star, on a red field within a ring. A standard for such a symbol looks unusual among technical documents, and its purpose is exactly the same as any other dimensional specification - to make reproduction exact and unambiguous wherever it is made. It fixes the geometry of the flower and the ring, the position and orientation of the stars, the proportions, and the colours in defined colorimetric terms so that the red is one red and not a family of them. It also sets out the permitted sizes and the rules for reproduction, which is what allows the emblem to appear identically on a document, a building and a screen.
