Scope

GB 6000-1999 is the English-translated version of 主要造林树种苗木质量分级.

GB 6000-1999 specifies the definitions, grading requirements, test methods and inspection rules for seedlings of the major tree species used for afforestation in China, and applies to bare-root seedlings raised in open fields, not to container or greenhouse seedlings.

It defines stock type, stock age notation (such as 1-0, 2-2 or 1(2)-0), seedling lot, caliper, seedling height, root length and width, first-degree lateral roots and the total number of new roots (TNR).

Acceptable seedlings must meet comprehensive control conditions (no quarantine pests, straight stem, plump terminal bud, full lignification, no damage, and a TNR test for conifers after long storage) and are then graded into Grade I and Grade II, first by the root system and then by caliper and height; the test methods cover random sampling by lot size (50 to 750 seedlings), measurement of caliper to 0.05 cm and TNR determination in river sand, and the inspection rules allow no more than 5 % of seedlings below grade.

Annex A (normative) gives the grading table by species, stock type and age with the regions of application. It replaces GB 6000-1985, adding 19 species and removing 11, introducing root indicators, a two-grade system and TNR, and dropping output and density indicators.

It was issued on 10 November 1999 and has been in force since 1 April 2000. Classification: ICS 65.020.20, CCS B61. The document runs to 20 pages, delivered complete in English translation.

Foreword

This standard is a revision of GB 6000-1985, Seedlings of major tree species for afforestation, made to keep pace with the development of seedling production technology in China. The revised standard retains those contents of the original standard that practice has shown to be suited to seedling production and afforestation in China, and makes the following changes to the relevant contents of the original standard:

- 19 tree species have been added and 11 removed, and certain quality indicators not suited to current production have been appropriately modified;

- root system length and the number of first-degree lateral roots longer than 5 cm, or the root width, have been added as indicators for seedling quality grading;

- Grade III seedlings (unacceptable seedlings) are no longer listed among the seedling quality grades; a two-grade system is used instead, and only the grades of Grade I and Grade II seedlings (acceptable seedlings) are specified;

- other important morphological and physiological indicators affecting seedling quality have been added as comprehensive control conditions;

- the indicator of the total number of new roots (TNR) of seedlings has been added, to test the vigour of conifer seedlings lifted from the nursery after long-term storage;

- the indicators of seedling output per unit area and density have been removed.

From the date of its implementation, this standard replaces GB 6000-1985.

Annex A of this standard is a normative annex.

This standard was proposed by the State Forestry Administration.

This standard is under the jurisdiction of the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Forest Tree Seeds.
