Scope
GB 4839-2009 is the English-translated version of 农药中文通用名称.
GB 4839-2009 specifies the Chinese common names of pesticides used in China and abroad, and requires them to be used wherever a pesticide name appears in pesticide administration, research, production, trade, use, health and epidemic prevention, environmental protection, publishing and advertising.
Its mandatory Clause 3 is a single table running to page 164 in which each pesticide is given its Chinese common name, its English name (mainly the ISO common name, with the source marked where another naming body is used), its chemical name and CAS registry number, and its structural formula; entries are grouped by names beginning with a numeral, with a Latin letter, and then by the Hanyu Pinyin of the Chinese name from A to Z, with related salts, esters and isomers listed under the parent compound.
An informative Annex A provides an English index giving the serial number of each English name, so that a pesticide can be found from its international name.
It is the second revision of the standard first issued in 1984 and replaces GB 4839-1998 Common names for pesticides: the title has been changed, the number of compounds increased, the entries re-sorted and the English index added.
It was issued on 27 April 2009 and has been in force since 1 November 2009. Classification: ICS 65.100, CCS G23. The document runs to 187 pages, delivered complete in English translation.

Foreword
Clause 3 of this standard is mandatory; the remainder is recommended.
This standard is a revision of GB 4839-1998 Common names for pesticides.
The main differences between this standard and GB 4839-1998 are:
- the title of the standard has been changed from "Common names for pesticides" to "Chinese common names for pesticides";
- the number of compounds with Chinese common names of pesticides has been increased;
- the entries have been re-sorted;
- an English index has been added.
Annex A of this standard is an informative annex.
From the date of its implementation, this standard replaces GB 4839-1998 Common names for pesticides.
This standard was proposed by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association.
This standard is under the jurisdiction of the National Technical Committee for Pesticide Standardization (SAC/TC 133).
