Scope

GB 16959-1997 is the English-translated version of 信息技术信息交换用藏文编码字符集基本集.

GB 16959-1997 specifies the set of basic Tibetan characters and their coded representation, for the representation, transmission, interchange, processing, storage, input and presentation of written Tibetan and its additional symbols.

It was prepared on the basis of GB 13000.1 (ISO/IEC 10646.1) and the Tibetan coded character set then being added by ISO, with identical technical content, and uses double-octet coding in row 0F of the Basic Multilingual Plane so that no code conversion is needed.

The document defines the terms of coded character sets, sets out the coded representation and bit weights, the use of control functions under Clause 16 of GB 13000.1, and declarations including implementation level 2 and the coding order of characters 0F86 to 0F89 and 0F8B.

Table 1 gives the code table of Tibetan graphic characters (0F00 to 0FBF) and Table 2 gives the name and code position of each character, marking the combining characters.

Foreword

This standard was prepared on the basis of GB 13000.1 and of the standard for Tibetan coded character sets for information interchange that the International Organization for Standardization is supplementing; its technical content is identical to the international standard, which will help to ensure information interchange.

This standard uses double-octet coding, also so as to be compatible with GB 13000.1, requiring no code conversion and facilitating information processing and interchange.

This standard was proposed by the Ministry of Electronics Industry of the People's Republic of China.

This standard is under the jurisdiction of the National Technical Committee for Information Technology Standardization.
