Scope
QC/T 556-2023 is the English-translated version of 汽车制动器温度测量方法及热电偶安装要求.
QC/T 556-2023 covers the measurement of automotive brake temperature and specifies the terms and definitions, measuring devices, thermocouple installation, infrared thermometer installation and measurement methods; it applies to temperature measurement during automotive brake testing.
It replaces QC/T 556-1999, which was the 1985 standard JB 3936-1985 renumbered with its content unchanged, so this is the first technical revision.
Against the 1999 edition it adds a terms and definitions clause, adds device requirements for contact measurement and for infrared thermometers, changes the indication error of the display and recording device, revises the installation of embedded thermocouples in the brake lining assembly, in the brake drum or disc and for brake fluid, adds requirements for rubbing thermocouples and a clause on installing an infrared thermometer, and drops the 1999 temperature compensation content and K value tables.
Clause 3 separates contact thermometry, non-contact thermometry and the embedded thermocouple whose measuring end sits inside the measured part.
For an embedded thermocouple on a brake lining assembly a through hole is machined to suit the measuring end diameter and the measuring end is fixed without looseness at a distance of 1 plus or minus 0.2 mm from the friction surface; on a brake drum it goes at the centre of the friction surface width clear of heat dissipation ribs, on a brake disc at the effective friction radius clear of ventilation ribs, holes and grooves, and for brake fluid on the wheel cylinder bleed screw.
Appendix A is informative and lists commonly used thermocouple structural types.

e) CHANGE the specific requirements for the installation of embedded thermocouples on the brake lining assembly (see 5.1.1; 2.1 of the 1999 edition);
f) CHANGE the specific requirements for the installation of embedded thermocouples on the brake drum (disc) (see 5.1.2; 2.2 of the 1999 edition);
g) CHANGE the specific requirements for the installation of embedded thermocouples when measuring brake fluid temperature (see 5.1.3; 2.3 of the 1999 edition);
h) ADD the specific requirements for the installation of rubbing thermocouples (see 5.2);
i) ADD a chapter "Installation of infrared thermometer", describing the installation steps and requirements (see Chapter 6);
j) CHANGE the specific requirements for "measurement preparation" (see 7.1; 3.1 of the 1999 edition);
k) CHANGE the specific requirements for "Temperature measurement" (see 7.2; 3.2 of the 1999 edition);
l) DELETE the relevant content of "Temperature compensation when the free end of the thermocouple is not 0 °C" (3.3 of the 1999 edition);
m) DELETE "Standard thermocouple technical data" and "Five thermocouple K value tables" (Appendix A and Appendix B of the 1999 edition);
n) ADD "Commonly used thermocouple structural types" (see Appendix A).
1 Scope
This document specifies the terms and definitions, measurement devices, thermocouple installation, infrared thermometer installation, measurement methods for automotive brake temperature measurement. This document applies to temperature measurement during automotive brake testing.

3 Terms and definitions
The terms and definitions as defined in GB/T 16839.1 and GB/T 5620, as well as the following terms and definitions, apply to this document.
3.1 Contact thermometry
A temperature measurement method, in which the temperature detection element is in contact with the measured object and reaches thermal equilibrium.
Note: Commonly used contact thermometry includes thermocouple temperature measurement method, resistance temperature measurement method, etc.
3.2 Non-contact thermometry
A temperature measurement method, in which the temperature detection element does not come into contact with the object being measured.
Note: Commonly used non-contact thermometry includes radiation thermometry, spectral thermometry, etc.
3.3 Embedded thermocouple
A thermocouple, whose measuring end is embedded inside the object being measured.
4 Measuring devices
4.1 Measuring device for contact thermometry
4.1.1 Contact temperature measurement devices shall meet the following requirements.
4.1.2 See Appendix A for the structural types of commonly used thermocouples.
4.3 Display and recording device
The device that displays and records the dynamic temperature of the brake shall meet the following requirements.
5 Thermocouple installation
5.1 Embedded thermocouple
5.1.1 Installation on the brake lining assembly
5.1.1.3 Process a through hole, at the corresponding installation position (the hole diameter is determined according to the outer diameter of the thermocouple measuring end). Fix the thermocouple measuring end in the hole, without looseness. The distance between the measuring end and the friction surface is (1 ± 0.2) mm. See Figure 1 and Figure 2 for details.
5.1.2 Installation on the brake drum (disc)
5.1.2.1 For brake drums, the thermocouple's measuring end shall be installed at the center of the width direction of the friction surface of the brake drum and avoid structures such as heat dissipation ribs.
5.1.2.2 For brake discs, the installation position of the thermocouple's measuring end shall be located at the effective friction radius of the brake disc, meanwhile avoid ventilation ribs (ventilation coils), heat dissipation holes, surface grooves and other structures.
5.1.3 Installation when measuring brake fluid temperature
5.1.3.1 The measuring end of the thermocouple is installed on the bleed screw of the brake wheel cylinder.
5.1.3.2 Process a through hole along the axis of the bleed screw's drain hole (the hole diameter is determined according to the outer diameter of the thermocouple's measuring end; the size clearance fits).
5.2 Rubbing thermocouple
5.2.1 The installation position of the thermocouple's measuring end on the brake drum is shown in Figure 5.
5.2.2 The installation position of the thermocouple's measuring end on the brake disc is shown in Figure 6.
5.2.3 After the position of the thermocouple's measuring end is determined, tighten the mounting bracket. The position of the measuring end shall not be changed during the test. After installation, the following requirements shall be met.
