Scope
GB/T 8873-2008 is the English-translated version of 粮油名词术语 油脂工业.
China's national terminology for the oils and fats industry. The vocabulary of edible oil processing is technical in a way that consumers never see and that determines the whole trade: pressing and solvent extraction produce crude oil, which is then degummed, neutralised, bleached, winterised and deodorised, and each of those steps has a name, an intermediate product and a set of technical and economic indicators attached to it - yield, refining loss, residual solvent, peroxide value. Those indicators are how an oil mill is judged and how its output is priced, so a term used loosely is a contract argued over. China is the world's largest importer of oilseeds and the largest processor of them, which is what gives the vocabulary its commercial weight. The standard specifies the terminology and definitions of the oils and fats industry, including the terms of oil preparation, of oil processing, and of the technical and economic indicators, and applies to research, production, processing, management and teaching in the field.
