GB/T 6540-2025 is the Chinese national standard covering the colour of an oil against the standard glasses — the cell and the light source, the dilution when the sample is too dark to read, and the number reported, which is the quickest indication that a product has been contaminated or has degraded. It replaces GB/T 6540-1986, a standard thirty-nine years old. In force from 1 May 2026. Issued on 5 October 2025, it has been in force since 1 May 2026, replacing GB/T 6540-1986.

4 Method Overview

The sample is injected into the sample container and compared with a standard glass colorimetric plate with a color number range of 0.5 to 8.0 under a standard light source.

The color numbers are compared, and the one that matches is taken as the color number of the sample. If no exact match can be found for the sample color, but it falls between two standard colors...

If the color is between two colors, report the darker shade of the two colors.
