1 Scope

China's national standard for the sleeve used in flared tube couplings. The sleeve sits between the nut and the flare, and it exists to separate two jobs that would otherwise conflict. Tightening the nut has to press the flare onto its seat with a large axial force, but the nut turns as it does so, and if it bore directly on the back of the flare it would drag the flare round against the seat and score both faces - which is how a flared joint is ruined on first assembly. The sleeve takes the nut's rotation on its own back face while pressing squarely on the flare, so the sealing surfaces are loaded without being twisted. It also spreads the load over the whole flare rather than the nut's thread diameter. Small as it is, it is the reason the joint can be made and remade. The standard specifies the sleeve's dimensions, marking and technical requirements, for tube outside diameters of 4 to 34 mm at 3.5 to 16 MPa.
